Educational Programs Available on Marco Island 🌴 Making the Shell begins before the snail is fully grown while it's still developing in its tiny larval stage .Shell glands secrete proteins at the base of the shell then the calcium carbonate is secreated on this base. The shell spirals as it grows. A protein layer is secreated over the minerals for coloration and to protect the shell. Process begins with the shell gland a small invagination from which the ingredients to make the shell are secreated and structured. The gland is located in the mantle a hard region where all the organs are located .The shell will continue to grow along with the snail. They grow & differ by the water and food they consumpt. In this photo we are looking at the True Tulip egg casing for their babies. The casings are harmless .When you see them on the beach and they are wet just leave them if they are dried out you can take them as a souvenir. This little guy is on the move. The Atlantic pygmy octopus is a reddish orange color which is caused by pigmented cells called chromatophores that are common in many animals .They are capable of becoming a dark, light shade ranging from brown to orange. As hatchlings, their chromatophores can also appear yellow. The pygmy octopus is found in warm temperate to tropical waters of the Atlantic. We see these little creatures from time to time . If you’re wondering what the octopus is gliding over it’s called Sea Pork .The Sea pork does favor the pork that we eat but this is not to eat even though it’s harmless .The pork is a filter feeder, its@ slimy , slick and gross looking. Beautiful Horse conch…our Florida State Shell to add to her collection. The conch is the largest species of snail in North America. The female individuals reach larger in size than the males. The animal can retract the soft parts of their body entirely into its shell and close it with its operculum. The soft part is a bright orange which is the body of the snail.
