Thetford Private Game Reserve

Thetford Private Game Reserve covers (including leased properties) some 3 000 ha of high rainfall sourveld adjacent to the Mazowe River.

Dominated by Brachystegia woodland on highly leached and mineral deficient soils, the area was used, since the early 1900s for to***co cultivation and livestock production. Historically, Thetford was characterised by open woodland, maintained in that state by large mammals such as elephant and by the impact of fire. With progression into the dry season, nutritional declines forced migratory specie

s such as buffalo, zebra and elephant to return to low-lying sweetveld in the Zambezi Valley. Those days are now gone, and the area has to be intensively managed. With high stocking rates, intervention in the form of supplementary feed, provision of mineral licks, and intensive tick and other parasite control, become mandatory. Thetford is located 25 km due north of Harare, where altitude ranges from 1376 m near the near-eastern part of the reserve, down to 1245 m at the Mazowe River - a height difference of 130 m. Temperatures are relatively cool and range from a July average of 14 degrees celcius, to an October average of 22 degrees. Frosts occur in the low-lying parts of the Reserve.
