I got the best text ever from my boy today! He’s been having the time of his life in his High School fly fishing class. They’ve covered fly casting, fly tying, entomology (bugs) and aquatic ecosystem habitat instruction.

“Hey my fly fishing teacher just told me that I was the first person that he gave a 100% to on the final so that made my day”

I am closing the guide business, for now. I’d like to thank our legislators for the 87% increase for my guide license fee, and the WDFW for wanting to over regulate the guide industry. Those two factors have settled the debate for me; I don’t want to guide anymore. I just can’t rationalize the overhead expense the State is imposing. I am a small operator, and can’t afford to be gouged any further by a fee happy, over regulating, overly tax focused State! If I decide to open the business again, I’ll let you know. I plan to keep this page up.

Please provide a repeal vote to HB 1597! This will reverse the Washington State Legislators heavy handed decision to raise guide license fees by 87% for residents of the State, and the ludicrous idea to decrease out of state guide licenses by around 30%. Leave it in the hands of State legislators to crush a tiny, but mighty industry! Not on my watch! Over regulating, over taxation, over governing private enterprise, simply does not work, will not work, and can not work. Let freedom reign.

It sure makes it hard to want to run a guide service with a State Government as regulation and fee increase focused as we have here in Washington! More fees, taxes, regulations, it all spells more loss to struggling operators.

After guiding professionally for 17 seasons and hundreds of guide trips, I am considering taking the 18th off, to re-evaluate the future of the guide service. I may use 2017 to develop a new business plan, website(s), and focus for guiding.

My question for friends, family and clients is, how does that sound? It's just an idea, but something I am thinking and praying about.

We received some much needed rain, but as the river drops fall fishing will be back to awesome! This is the time of the year to be on the YAK! Weekend guiding went mighty fine! We caught a lot of rainbows and a beautiful cutthroat trout on the YAK. River flows are down, and it was sure nice to be on the river I love so much with such great people!

OK folks, we just got home from Bozeman Montana and got the new drift boat squared away in the garage. She is going to add some good versatility to our guide operation. Please get ahold of me for bookings. I've already got Bob and Ryan booked for the maiden voyage, but would love to get more folks on the guide calendar for lower Yakima River smallmouth and catfish, and upper Yakima River trout trips.

Uncle Keith Roylance has passed away, and everyone who knew him, knows how much he loved Grandma's Lake/Lemanasky Lake in Okanogan County! He loved owning this gem and fishing it! Here he is fishing it in his trusty old aluminum row boat and hoisting up one of the lake's whoppers. Jaclyn and I have always had a special relationship with Uncle Keith, and we knew how much he loved us. We celebrate him and his lake this Memorial Day weekend. His memorial services are on Saturday at 2pm in Omak for any of our fishing contacts that will be in the area.

This should be a great year to get down to the Lower Yakima River for bass and catfish. For those that have called or emailed this spring about the best time to come, I have a better idea of when to tell you to come. I like to fish it when the flows are low. Get back ahold of me, we are close! This has been one of my favorite trips to guide, since 2005 when we started offering these floats.

We trolled for some walleye yesterday on Potholes Reservoir and had a blast! When high flows keep us from fly fishing the YAK we'll head out to the Columbia Basin for trout, bass and walleye.

Here's a little fly fishing tribute to my hero, my Dad. He passed away recently from a battle with Alzheimer's. Jaclyn and I had him out on the Yakima River in the early days, when we started the guide service. What special memories! What a great man!
