My name is Victor, I'm a Swedish birder who moved to Cyprus and are now enjoying the new opportunities of birding that this place provides. I've been birding since I was 9 years old whole heartedly and also done some time ringing birds and guiding field trips. Here I will try to share some good stories with you and some true insight of why birding is so much fun! I'll give you my tips and trix and
also discuss some more serious topics here and there. Finally even I caught up with this super cute Pygmy Owl who has been around a park in Gothenburg for a while! Wasn't easy to find, but eventually I followed the angry notices from some Bluetits and voila. Beautiful weather to enjoy this beautiful bird - Europe's smallest owl, just over 15cm long and about 60g in weight.
Today, a welcomed meeting with a Great Northern Diver! Haven't seen one in Sweden for a long time 🥲 It didn't hurt that the bird showed in really good light and in a short distance. Unfortunately, of course, I dialed in the wrong settings in the camera, so, yeah, the picture is what it is 😅😝 But a great meeting never the less!
Merry Christmas from northern Sweden! Bullfinch and Willow Tit are regular guest at the bird feeder here and today even the sun made an appearance, if just for a few hours ☀️❄️☃️🎅
On a cold day like yesterday, it's best to stay close to your partner and keep warm ❤️ Beautiful Tawny Owls that can be heard here and there in Gothenburg now during winter. They are harder to find during the day though - just look at that camouflage! 🦉🌲
A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege to talk to local birders in Gothenburg about the birding hotspot Cyprus! Made me really miss my time there and all the lovely people I got to know...! What a pleasure to catch a glimpse of Cyprus birding here in Sweden with an unexpected visitor. This beautiful European Roller has been a delightful treat for many birders on the Swedish westcoast during the last couple of days.
A good day for raptor migration today at Cape Greco - several Eurasian Hobbys came in straight off sea. Later this beautiful Montague's Harrier was hunting just next to us during our obligatory coffee break ☕
Everyone of the group agreed -- this singing male Cyprus Warbler, a real stunner, was the true highlight of the day!
Another great day where we shifted focus from Paphos to Larnaca region. We made one stop in Episkopi, Limassol and were able to find an early arrival of Eleonoras Falcon resting on the cliffs.
Vretsia -- probably one of my absolute favourite places in Cyprus, both for birding and recreation.

Absolutely amazing day today with my group of Swedish birders. Spent the whole day around Akrotiri and got a pretty good list with some major highlights - including Cream-coloured Courser, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater AND Demoiselle Crane! Wow!
Absolut stoked to see this young or female Walrus resting on the docks in Smögen, Sweden! Only a handful sightings of Walrus in Sweden before. 🦭 Just a shame that people are unable to keep their distance - sneaking up all the way to its face to do a selfie. Only a matter of time before people starts pat it on its head. Seriously people?!?
After three days of searching, finally the Black-winged Kite decided to make an appearance!

Day 3. 5am.
Calm and still, gentle overcast, lots of singing Whinchats, diving Snipes and distant Lapwings.
Two hours of raptor watching produced White-tailed Eagle, Red Kites, Marsh Harriers and plenty of Common Buzzards. Also our first Swift, Bluethroat and Red-backed Shrike! Nice!

It was an early rise last Saturday with the alarm set for 3:30 and nets up at 4:00! An amazing morning with good weather, great company and plenty of birds around! All in all about 40 birds ringed and we were happy to see that our new ringing site for an CES project has great potential!

Friday! Hoping for a really good birding weekend with plenty of newly arrived migrants! Here's some pics from last week's sea watch at Bohus-Malmön in the northern archipelago.

A pretty awesome day yesterday that just proves what an amazing and exciting hobby Birding really is!!
Haven't been Birding much these last couple of weeks -- bad weather, heavy workload etc. So when I visited my parents yesterday for some pre-summer work on the house, I took a 10 min break to scan the sea for anything that the storm from the last two days might have blown closer to shore. Thankfully 10 Gannets were fishing just a few 100m out which really made my day. THEN I caught a very quick glimps of a small Eider-like bird that swooped by and disappeared behind a cliff. I shouted "Steller's Eider!!" and grabbed my scope and ran down to the sea like a lunatic to get a better look. And yes, there it was, a beautiful adult male, just swimming around with some Common Eider friends about 30m out from the cliffs. I haven't seen one in more than 15 before yesterday. Fantastic!!
