Traffic volumes on the I-405 are expected to increase significantly and the population is expected to grow 11 percent by 2040.
Today, the San Diego Freeway (I-405) is one of the most congested freeways in Orange County, carrying more than 300,000 vehicle trips in some sections each day. Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) in cooperation with Caltrans is improving 16 miles of the San Diego Freeway (I-405) between State Route 73 (SR-73) and Interstate 605 (I-605). It also will construct the 405 Express Lanes from
SR-73 to I-605. The new express lanes – incorporating the existing carpool lanes and connectors that opened in 2014 – will be two lanes in each direction. Check out the project's "Inside the 405" progress video series: https://bit.ly/405series

Did you know? To update some of Orange County’s most vital infrastructure, the project contractor used:
- 172,000 cubic yards of Redi-Mix concrete
- 360,000 tons of asphalt
- 38,000,000 pounds of bridge rebar
You may have noticed that water is ponding in some ramp areas with the recent rain events. As part of the project, crews installed detention & infiltration basins, per Caltrans’s requirements, in these locations to address storm water capacity & water quality. The water is held in the basins & filtered before soaking back into the ground or is released into the storm drain system. The project team continues to monitor the basins to ensure they are working correctly.

This was the last bridge on the project to be demolished for reconstruction.
Newland’s bridge improvements included construction of a new northbound sidewalk, bike lanes in both directions, and two additional vehicle lanes.
McFadden Street bridge was the first on the project to receive demolition construction activities.
Upon its reopening in 2020, the bridge unveiled 2 additional vehicle lanes, new bike lanes on both sides and a new eastbound sidewalk!

As we move towards total project completion/closeout, crews continue landscaping throughout the corridor. These shots showcase fresh landscaping in the City of Seal Beach.
NEW! The northbound (NB) and southbound (SB) 405 Express Lanes and connectors from I-605, SR-22, and SR-73 will close for maintenance.
The closures are anticipated as early as 11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, to 6 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13.

While remaining open to traffic, the Goldenwest Street and Bolsa Avenue bridges were completely reconstructed. The improved bridges now consist of an additional 2-3 lanes of travel, new bike lanes in each direction, and one additional sidewalk!
This highlights the Slater Avenue bridge. Slater bridge was the first to be completed and reopened to traffic. 🚙

⚠️Attention commuters and travelers! 🚧The existing carpool lanes within I-405 Improvement Project limits will start closing tonight to allow crews to test the NEW 405 Express Lanes.
Tonight, Oct. 25, at 11 p.m., the northbound I-405 carpool lane will close at SR-73. On Nov. 1 at 11 p.m., the carpool lanes in both directions between SR-22 and I-605 as well as the I-605 and SR-22 carpool connectors will also close.
Drivers can expect significant delays throughout the area and are encouraged to use alternate routes if possible and allow for extra travel time.
Once testing is complete, the 405 Express Lanes will open to the public between SR-73 and the Orange County/LA County Line. A FasTrak transponder will be required for all vehicles to use the new 405 Express Lanes. With a switchable FasTrak transponder, vehicles with three or more are always free, two-person carpools are free off-peak, and solo drivers can choose to pay a toll to use the new Express Lanes, which replace the traditional carpool lanes.
In addition to the 405 Express Lanes, the 405 Improvement Project – a centerpiece of OCTA’s Measure M – added one regular lane in each direction, improved interchanges, and rebuilt overpasses with new bike lanes and sidewalks.
