FRIDAY BROADCAST: Get Excited About Mawlid!

As Muslims, we have our own holidays and special occasions that we celebrate throughout the year (more than just the two ^Ids). It is important to learn about such holidays in order to hold onto our Islamic culture, especially while living in predominantly non-Muslim societies. In North America particularly, we are surrounded by the customs of the kuffar in almost every month of the year regarding their celebrations. But we must not imitate the kuffar in what is specific to them, whether or not we agree with (or even know about) the origins of those celebrations.

Let us keep a strong Muslim identity by getting excited about Islamic holidays, such as Mawlid-un-Nabiyy (Celebration of the birth of Prophet MuHammad, Sallallaahu ^alayhi wa sallam), which is coming up in about a month’s time. Let us Muslims be the ones to count down to our special occasions in anticipation, rather than letting them pass us by as just another day (or not even keeping track of when they are coming up).

In my experience, it is very hard on the children not to partake in activities related to non-Muslim occasions when such activities are imposed upon them as part of school curriculums, if they do not have anything else to be excited about. They may just follow the crowd for the reason of wanting to fit in or because “everyone else is doing it”. Remember that children tend to follow their desires and are not as capable of resisting temptation as adults. But we need to protect our children from such blind imitation, because in certain cases, imitating the kuffar would be blasphemous, and we definitely don’t want our children’s hearts to be attached to something that might lead them to blaspheme in the future.

Muslims all over the world celebrate the birth of Prophet MuHammad, Sallallaahu ^alayhi wa sallam, as a way of honoring him and thanking Allaah for sending him to guide us to the path of Islam; the greatest endowment one can have in this life.

Sallu ^alaa Rasulillaah!

FRIDAY BROADCAST: Happy Hijri New Year

Today was the 29th of Dhul-Hijjah (i.e. Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014), and could possibly be the last day of this Hijri year of 1435. Tonight the moon should have been sought, and if it was seen then tonight would be the first night of Muharram, 1436 AH. If the moon was not seen, then tonight would be the 30th night of Dhul-Hijjah, and Saturday would be the start of the Islamic New Year.

Let us take this opportunity to look back on the previous year and make note of the goals we set for ourselves, the ones we have achieved, and the ones that are still in progress. Let us set new goals and aim to reach even higher achievements, first and foremost in our Religious affairs, and also in the worldly matters.

Let us remember the story of the migration of the Prophet, Sallallaahu ^alayhi wa sallam, and his companion Abu Bakr, and how strong their reliance upon Allaah was. It is so easy to get caught up with day-to-day difficulties, but when you remember what the Prophet went through, it will help to put things into perspective and lessen your worries about this dunya, which is going to end.

I wish all my brothers and sisters in Islam a blessed Hijri New Year!
