7 Oakfield Place was once a center for Talmud study. It has sadly been slowly rotting and waiting for a buyer. The site adjacent is being built on atm. Hopefully this might breath some life into this old beautiful Georgian house.

The winter sun hangs low in the sky and the seasonal holidays means that December 25th was a perfect day for a tour. The streets were next to empty. The wildlife was out in full force on the canal and the city was bathed in orange. We even got a sneaky look into the Jewish Museum which I put down to luck as it wasn't officially open.

News flash.. Sometimes it rains.. But the tour goes on. Lovely group today who took on the elements like heros.

Dublin City is very old (1400 years or so) and much of its physical character in relation to elevation and road layout can be traced back some 500 years or more. Dublin city center itself is known for its Georgian buildings and gardens. The Jewish population really exploded in the late 1800s and the citys Jews went from around 650 to 4500 in a couple of decades. Walking through the Liberties today there are a few areas where you can see the same views, touch the same bricks and walk on the same cobbles as Robert Briscoe or Yitzak Hertzog or Ester Stienberg. is a patchwork of new and old and modernity and tradition.. As are its Jews.

37 Adelaide Road was home to the Dublin Hebrew Congregation fron 1892 till 1999. It was the first built for purpose synagogue space in the city. In 1922 it was enlarged but since its sale in 1999 its been reduced to a narrow portion of its former self. Now it is home to who have remembered its history by naming four meeting rooms Elliman, Solomans, Kernoff and Marcus after famous Irish Jews.

Usually tours start at the amazing gardens by St Patrick's Cathedral. It's a small garden in relation to its cousins but is well maintained and always reflects the season. It was tour day today. Had a great time.

Greenville Hall finally closed its doors and was sold in the late 1980's.
A few years ago I had the pleasure of being guided around the former shul by Sean Mason, the (now retired) head of Mason technologies. Sean was very gracious with his time and it became super apparent he was very proud of the buildings . He told me of the many many times when he would get an email from the family of some people who had been married their and that he loved to open the doors to visitors.
At the end of a couple of very interesting hours he pointed to a shed at the end of the car park and told me when they opened it there was a button that made the roof slide off and that plastic lemons fell out. It made me smile. You can see the Greenville Hall on the .

The remaining front of St Mary's Abbey Synagogue. Opened in the early 1880s with a congregation of some 450 or so. Sadly today it is unused and in a bad way with no a sign or shield to point to its former glory or purpose. @ Dublin, Ireland

Dublin is full of artist customised electrical boxes like this one. You'll find this down the road from the old Greenville hall synagogue. The Dublin mosque is across the road and it's a stone's throw from the corner of the SCR and Clanbrassil street (home to Joyce's Bloom).

This Sunday March 17th is St Patrick's day. The city of Dublin (and most of the country) is united in a celebration of Irishness. The story of struggle and hope. Oppression. Loss. Famine. Love. Independence. Today's St Patrick's day deals little with the man who is believed by many to be of French jewish ancestry. Instead it's about everyone, no matter who or where there are, enjoying that extra dash of colour that comes from being irish.. even if it's only for the day.

Built between 1932 and 1934 , this former Jewish day school on Bloomfield avenue is listed as a building of architectural importance.
The construction of new residential streets in this area coincided with the immigration of Jewish communities fleeing pogroms in Europe in the late nineteenth century, and the area around Clanbrassil Street and South Circular Road became known as Little Jerusalem. This building was designed by Rupert Jones, and built by John Kenny & Son of Harcourt Street. It is listed in Thom's Directory of 1937 as 'Zion Schools' and it was established to provide education to the Jewish children of the newly-established community. It remained in use until 1980, when the school moved to new premises in Rathgar. It is significant reminder of the former Jewish community in this area.

Within two minutes of the SCR is the gorgeous Portabello area of Dublin. What used to be a major trade area and harbour (now filled in) is now a very pleasant spot for a coffee or a walk by the canal.
