I could see him talking to himself, up there on the rock. Just a few words, “Ok Viggo you got this.” Watching the child you’re guiding step into themselves doesn’t always look like this. Sometimes it’s them staying quiet when others around are raging, or saying clearly a truth they know won’t be well received. Different kids, different ways. We’re just glad to be here for each of them.

Remember when we did a winemaking for kids project with Filippo and .land_ ? 😅 We’ve had some adventures, that’s for sure. Tomorrow we’ll send out our newsletter with all the details for one of our greatest adventures yet, Japan this June. Send us your email and we’ll make sure you’re on the list. We wrote in our newsletter last week about how hard it is to “stop” travelling… how being constantly on the move allows you drift over top patches of thorny questions. But we’re also finding hidden trails down here, leading to simple and sweet places. We’re making broth and growing sprouts in the pantry, and of course we’re meeting friends at the beach. It’s still new, of course, and there’s still a lot up in the air. But the colour of the water here is a shade we’ve been looking for.

“Can younger siblings come?” You can ask Iseault… she’s tagged along on our trips since she was two, and if you can’t tell, she’s well-loved. The older kids call her “Queen Iseault”, they carry her around, hold her hand, cheer for her, bring her small gifts… it’s like having a bunch of older cousins who think you’re amazing. As our kids have grown the focus of the program has grown along with them. They’re not tiny anymore, so welcoming little ones on our trips is a special balm for our own parent-hearts. Thank you for bringing them!

It’s one thing to read about history, and another to stand in its shadow. We heard the story of this old whisky boat right here on these rocks, how all hands were saved thanks to the courage of the islanders who rigged a kind of zip line out to the floundering ship. And we couldn’t help feeling grateful for our own crew, this diverse, mad bunch, who worked together as a team, supported each other through storms and swam together in the sun. Inis Oírr, off the west coast of Ireland, was a day trip for our QC Caravan, and one we’d be happy to repeat. We assembled for the boat in the morning, then worked our way towards this wreck, past a sunken church, a ruined castle and horses hungry for a scratch. One of our favorite days yet.

Family Gayhering First up, a return to Portugal’s Costa Vicentina this September. That first deep breath when you step out of the car brings it all back, the salty air, the rock rose in bloom and the people that call this home. We love it, every time. And we promise, so will you. In one week we leave seattle for our first stop on the QC Caravan, Morocco! Five years ago this month we took the same trip to research our first ever Family Gathering, a magical week spent in Marrakech and Essaouira with families who’ve become lifelong friends. Five years is a lot of time, but it feels good that the most important things haven’t changed a bit. We’ll be sharing some moments from the archives in our stories to get us ready for a return to this enchanting place.
