Worried? Scared? Confused? DON'T PANIC!
HEALTHY ADULTS ARE CONSIDERED LOW RISK
There's enough hype and panic out there already about coronavirus, COVID-19, so KNOW THE FACTS.
Coronavirus, COVID-19, is a virus causing illness with symptoms such as fever, coughing, and difficulty breathing. If you are a healthy adult, your risk is low, according to the US CDC. Although the virus is highly contagious, healthy adults infected with the coronavirus will experience symptoms much like any other cold or flu virus-- and mortality risk is low.
People at danger of serious health risk from COVID-19 are elderly adults, babies, and those with underlying health conditions or compromised immune systems. Health care workers should also exercise extreme caution.
THE BEST DEFENSE is frequent, consistent hand washing.
LEARN PROPER TECHNIQUES FOR HAND-WASHING:
1. Using warm water and soap, rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds (as a rule of thumb, singing the "ABC" song all the way through takes about 20 seconds).
2. Curl your fingers and rub your nails against the palm of your hands (germs love to hide under your nails).
3. Rinse thoroughly
4. Dry your hands completely, because germs spread more easily via wet surfaces.
PREVENT INFECTION by refraining from touching your face, using a tissue to cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze (and immediately discarding the tissue), avoiding people who are sick, and daily disinfecting high-touch surfaces at work and at home such as doorknobs, sink faucets, telephones, light switches, and other handles and switches.
TREATMENT
IF you or your loved ones are in a population at high risk of infection or complications, carefully watch cold and flu symptoms. Call your doctor or visit an urgent care facility if symptoms worsen or if there is difficulty breathing.
TRAVELING?
The same precautions apply when you are traveling, whether domestic or overseas. If you choose to wear a face mask, make sure it is one that filters out viruses. As always, check the CDC and State Department websites to check risk levels of your destinations.
