Looking forward to reading She Rides, the story of Alenka Vrecek’s transformational 2,500 journey by bicycle from Lake Tahoe California through the Sierra Nevada Mountain range to the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, alone. Was lucky enough to hear her story at a book signing this weekend and an interview by the travel writer, Don George.

Used bookstore find! Was lucky to recently stumble on another travel writing collection by Paul Theroux… Figures in a Landscape: People and Places. Theroux’s essays never disappoint, with dazzling descriptions of his latest travel adventures, literary criticism of writers like Henry David Thoreau and Hunter Thompson, and some great stories with characters like Elizabeth Taylor and Robin Williams.

An interesting day in history, captured brilliantly by a great travel writer Jan Morris

2 June 1953. Thousands lined the procession route to Westminster Abbey in the pouring rain to witness the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

On the other side of the world a man crept out of his sleeping bag and reached out to turn on his radio. “A few crackles and hisses; and then the voice of an Englishman. “Everest has been climbed”, he said. “Queen Elizabeth has been given the news. The crowds waiting in the wet London streets have cheered and danced to hear of it.”

The person in the sleeping bag was Jan Morris, then James. She was the Times correspondent tasked with possibly the last of the great Fleet Street scoops, who had joined the British Team that became the first to conquer Everest.

Coronation Everest. ‘a little book of historical romanticism’, is her account of the ultimate earthly pinnacle of exploration - the top of the world.

Fifty years after its publication Jan Morris wrote ‘Britain has changed since then. I have changed myself.’ But wherever she went, someone always mentioned her association with the coronation and Everest and spoke of it in a tone of wistful affection, as a memory of simpler, happier times.

On the eve of the coronation of King Charles III, the forecast promises rain. The crowds waiting in the wet London streets will cheer and dance but its unlikely there’ll be a scoop as great as the conquering of Everest.

New review! We finally got the chance to read The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, the powerful and inspiring story of two sisters living during the horrors of Nazi-occupied France during World War II. This amazing novel is both heart-wrenching and heartwarming, and a must-read for anyone who wants to be inspired by the resilience and courage of humanity, even in the darkest of times.

Travel Tip Tuesday! The small town of Mendocino in Northern California is just a hidden gem, with rugged cliffs, hidden ocean coves, beautiful redwood forests, and a charming array of little shops and restaurants. The beaches are beautiful but do expect it to be windy and cold. Located a full three hours north of San Francisco, this is a fantastic destination for taking photos, hiking and simply soaking in the scenery. Whale watching season is from December to April.
