We are super excited for this upcoming ice fishing season! We are happy to report that most of Devils Lake is iced over. Although no where near safe and fish-able, but to have this huge body of water iced over by Thanksgiving is rare these days. Temperatures return to cold next week and that should definitely build some more ice. Our reservations and guiding begins December 15th.

All of our guides have been enjoying a between seasons break and now our attention has turned to getting our gear ready. We are also looking forward to the St. Paul Ice Fishing Show Dec. 2,3,and 4th. As always, we will be sharing a booth with Woodland Resort. Please stop by and see us and grab our new brochure.

As our availability calendar indicates on our website, www.perchpatrol.com , our schedule is quite full. We Thank You for that! Now is the perfect time to get your reservations in place before the St Paul Show. Give us a call (701) 351-3474 and Zippy will help you find a time that works and can also recommend lodging accommodations for your group. Kind of a weird year…having ice this early, the Vikings are winning…not used to this!

Happy New Year Everybody!! The Perch Patrol Guide Service is in full swing and the fishing on Devils Lake has not disappointed! Numerous guests have enjoyed some excellent fishing so far on many different areas of the lake.

Most of our success has been in various depths between 26 and 34 feet of water. Some areas the perch are more schooled than other areas and this definitely affects how aggressive the bite is. If you can mark 3 or 4 of them on your flasher, they will compete for it and they can be easy to catch. Other times when it is single and doubles the bite is very subtle.

Ice conditions are still a concern even though we have 12 inches in most areas. We are still experiencing warmer than normal temps and radical temperature changes which makes the ice expand and contract. This is what keeps cracks and pressure ridges forming in more than normal places. We are NOT driving trucks or vehicles yet and do not recommend that anyone does quite yet.

Our schedule has been very busy so far and it looks as though it will be all winter for us. We do still have openings in January, February, and March and there is still lots of great dates available.

As always we invite you to look at our website www.perchpatrol.com for more information on all of our packages, guide only daily rates, and availability. To make a reservation, please give us a call on our reservation hotline (701) 351-3474.

Still have a little availability this week if you want to take advantage of some beautiful weather and some great action!

Merry Christmas Everyone!! For the Perch Patrol Guide Service and the ice conditions on Devils Lake, our Christmas present came a day early! The best present we could ask for was some brutal cold temperatures (-11 below last night) to thicken the ice and freeze up some cracks and thin spots that we were experiencing. In the interest of safety for everyone, we rescheduled most of our before Christmas trips until after Christmas until this last cold front actually happened. Our guide staff has been busy checking ice conditions all over the lake and of course some of them couldn’t resist the urge to wet a line and catch a few fish while they were at it. Tanner Thomas did guide a couple of groups and the good news is the perch and walleye fishing has been spectacular so far! December 27th we hit the ice kicking off the 26th year for the Perch Patrol Guide Service. Our schedule has been filling in rapidly the past few weeks but we do still have openings. Please visit our website www.perchpatrol.com for more information and availability. To make a reservation, please give us a call on the reservation hotline (701) 351-3474. Everyone have a safe and Merry Christmas and we look forward to fishing with you SOON!

Now that Thanksgiving is over, just thought we would give everyone a little ice update on our ice conditions on Devils Lake. As you can see in the photos, our current ice is ranging anywhere from 6 inches to open water. The good news is that after next week the forecast looks more promising for cold weather!

We are gearing up for the St. Paul Ice Fishing Show Dec. 6,7,8th. Now is the perfect time to make some plans and get that trip booked before the show to lock in the dates you want. Please visit our website www.perchpatrol.com for availability and more information and give us a call (701) 351-3474 to schedule a trip!

The past 25 years, we have been very fortunate to be featured on Outdoor Television shows by some of the best in the business! If the fish bite and cooperate, the script writes itself. But there have also been plenty of occasions where the fish get camera shy and it takes persistence, creativity, and plenty of hard work to get a segment produced.

Devils Lake Ice Fishing is Always on My Mind!!

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. – October 17, 2019 - When the calendar shifts from Summer to Fall, it’s time to make plans for Devils Lake ice fishing. Perch and walleye fishermen know that prime periods book quickly.

This is especially true based on the catch results over the past several months. Mark Bry, owner of Bry’s Guide Service, talked recently while heading home from Wyoming with a nice bull elk in his truck. He said, “Devils Lake ice fishing is always on my mind.” With late open water fishing and duck hunting underway, he commented on the very successful spring and summer fishing.

“The perch from 9 to 11 inches were common. An 11 inch Devils Lake perch is a really good perch. They are fat, tasty and will make up the bulk of this winter’s catch,” he said. “Of course, the 12-inchers up to 15 are there also.”

Walleyes in the “eater” size range are everywhere. Bry said, “This strong class of 13 to 15-inch fish will provide lots of opportunities and a good bite this winter. The bigger fish generally come early and late in the day.”

Devils Lake is big with thousands of places to fish. He recommended that visitors hire a guide service for their trip or for a couple days to learn tactics and locations. With Sno Bears to make travel easy, lodging, shelters, gear, fish-cleaning and food, he said, “Call early. Book now at 702-739-0161.”

Zippy Dahl not only has the coolest name for a guide, but he has been on every inch of Devils Lake ice for the past 25 years with the famous Perch Patrol. Now 11 veteran guides strong, Dahl said, “I’m proud of them.”

Each guide transports clients in Polaris crew-cab Rangers. “They go through anything,” he said. “Devils Lake presents challenges with snow and wind, and we want to get to the best fishing spots.” Some trips might be 40 miles on the big lake, although he said since 1991, the lake came up 35 feet, but recently dropped seven feet. “Experience and those old GPS waypoints make all the difference on this huge sheet of ice,” he explained.

Dahl figures that 90 percent of the Perch Patrol clients come for perch. He said being prepared for the ever-abundant walleyes is also important on those days when “perch lock-jaw” occurs under the ice. With eater-size walleyes everywhere and nicer fish mixed in, Dahl is excited to showcase this bite.

In fact, Todd Caspers, district fisheries biologist noted that the overall walleye numbers in test nets this summer averaged 26.1 per net, compared with a long-term average of 21 per net. The 10 to 15 inch size walleyes came in at 16.9 fish per net, nearly double the long-term average of 9.4 per net. He said, “Devils Lake had three good walleye year-classes in 2016, 2017 and 2018.”

Walleyes will become part of the teaching and learning curve for Perch Patrol clients this winter. “We teach clients how to use electronics, how to jig to catch fish and give them the opportunity to use the best gear. Many tell us they can’t wait to try these methods at home,” he said.

The Perch Patrol offers guiding for individuals or groups as well as complete packages – lodging, guiding, meals – via Woodland Resort and the Sleep Inn. Perch Patrol: 701-351-3474.

General information

Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010 Latest Fishing Report - Wednesday, Dec. 1 2010 Season's Greetings everybody! Well she turned white and cold on us here in the north country. Devils Lake is froze over and has been for soon a week now. We are making ice folks and that is a beautiful thing! We just received our shipment of the new Fish Trap Thermo X's from Clam Corp, a sure sign winter is here. Tomorrow we will be heading to St. Paul, Minnesota for the St. Paul Ice Fishing show. It is the largest ice fishing show in the world. Once again the Perch Patrol will share a booth with Woodland Resort. We will be handing out brochures, answering questions, and talkin ice fishing. If you get a chance, please stop by and say "hi" While we are in the cities, we will be picking up our new Strikemaster augers and 24 Vexilars for our clients to use this upcoming season. We did request some of the new Vexilar FL-22's. There supply is low however so we may not get all of them that we requested. But there will be 24 units, and they will all have a bottom zoom and that is the most important feature for us fishing Devils Lake. The phone has been ringing and the emails have been pouring in, lots of groups making reservations. This is the Perch Patrol's 16th year of operation and we are looking forward to another successful season. The World Famous Perch Express is still our most popular package and Thanks to you, our customers, it is still the top rated ice fishing adventure in the ice fishing industry. Now is the perfect time to plan your ice fishing adventure to Devils Lake this winter. We still have most dates open and we want to take your group fishing with us this season. No group too big or small. We are anticipating a great winter. Our perch population is as strong as it has been in quite a while, the walleye fishing is some of the best in North America, and our northern pike are as hungry and as plentiful as they normally are. We have a lot of good things happening in our lake and we believe all of our species will be hitting on all cylinders this upcoming season.
