Flowing from Silves down through Portimão to Praia da Rocha and Ferragudo, the Rio Arade twists its way through a major part of the western Algarve region of Portugal.

Paddle down the the Rio Arade and you'll be following the same route that the Phoenicians, Romans and Moors took in days gone by as they sailed from Silves to the sea.

The Ria Formosa coastal lagoon stretches from the city of Faro all the way eastwards past the city of Tavira.

This 60km long stretch, which includes the islands of Armona, Culatra and Farol, is a paradise for birds, fish and other wildlife.

On a still morning, Ria Formosa is breathtakingly beautiful.

The perfect paddling spot to get away from it all!

The Barragem de Funcho (Water Dam) is located in the municipality of Silves and was completed in 1993. It is fed by the River Arade and is located upstream of the Arad Dam.

Access is pretty tough, but once you’re on the dam it’s like no one else exists.

Top European athletes take on the Guadiana Challenge, hosted by AlgarveSup.

Portugal is at the forefront of the fastest growing water-sport in the world with a brand new, high profile event designed to test the abilities and stamina of some of Europe’s finest athletes.

On 28th March 2015 a number of professional and amateur stand up paddle boarders will descend 32km of the Guadiana River in a gruelling challenge from Mertola and ending 6-8 hours later in Alcoutim.
