The Audubon Center is housed in Les Cayes Haiti at the American University of the Caribbean which is a 5 year degree-granting university incorporated in both Haiti and Florida. The Center was founded in the late 1990s as a grassroots student and community organization. It is named for the naturalist John James Audubon who was born in Les Cayes in 1785 and later became a world-renown artist of bird

The Audubon Center focuses on environmental education in the surrounding schools, documentation on Audubon's and environmental work in Haiti, bird counts, and locating ornithology and conservation biology opportunities for students at AUC and other schools. It also manages a small forested sanctuary on the AUC campus which is home to many birds as well as a cattle egret rookery. The Audubon Center room contains books and posters about the natural history of Haiti, binoculars, and GPS units. Contact Debbie Baker, [email protected], to arrange a visit to the Center, or to request an educational program at your school or organization.
