A story of thousands of years ago unfolds in front of your eyes.
It is the city of ancient Olynthos.

To the area, which was constantly inhabited since the Neolithic Age, settled people from Pieria around 650 BC.

Cool info:
According to mythology, the town was built by the brother of Olynthos, the son of the mythic King of Thrace, Strymonas. Olynthos was killed by a lion and his brother built the town to honour his brother's name. However, the linguists insist that olynthos is the name of the wild fig tree, which is in abundance in the area, and the town was named after it.

Did you know?

The central church of the Saint Andrew skete was built in 1867, in accordance with the so-called athonian monastery style.

It is the largest church on Athos rising to 30m in height, with majestic, golden crosses extend from its cupolas.

In the interior of the church are kept the relics of Saint Andrew.

The Monastery of Zygou is one of the finest examples of the Athonite architecture found outside Mount Athos whose structure can be studied without impediments of posterior building phases and liturgical use.

The ruins of the former Mount Athos Monastery of Zygou are situated in the area of the village of Ouranoupolis, about 40 meters outside the nowadays border of Mount Athos. A very interesting and short walk from Ouranoupolis, the distance is only 2,2 km and it takes about 25 minutes.

Worth to see:
In the excavation site visitors will admire the castle, the towers and mainly the Catholicon of the monastery which is being excavated. The castle consists of five construction phases, all older than 1211. The surface inside the walls is 5,5 acres and the walls had 11 towers –some of which are being restored today.
