A cultural exploration begins!
Discovering the ancient town of Toroni rewards you with breath-taking views and fascinating history. 📜
Ancient Toroni was one of the biggest and wealthiest towns of Halkidiki, with its location first been described by Thucydides.
🏛️ During the years of the Roman Occupation and the Byzantine Era, the walls of the town were reinforced to protect it from sea and land. They were built with the construction material that had been left from the ancient acropolis.
👉Migrants from Evia inhabited Toroni in the 8th century BC. The town joined the Athenian Alliance, until the Spartans conquered it.
👉King Philip II of Macedonia conquered the town in 348 BC while in 168BC the region fell to the Romans.
Worth it to see:
👉The visitor can see part of the town's walls and ruins from the acropolis. The docks of the harbour, made of huge granite stones, were discovered at the bottom of the sea, along with remainders of stonewalls, which continue on the shore and were probably the town's warehouses.

A hike… perfect for the whole family!
Mavrobara lake is a place of rare beauty located in the forest between Kriopigi and Polychrono, just 3 km from the main road.
The lake shelters two rare species of water turtles (this is why it is also known as the “Turtle Lake”) in danger of extinction (Emys orbicularis and Mauremys caspica), which find refuge here. Small benches placed at the area, allow you to enjoy conveniently this land full of canes and nenuphars.

Explore the Weaving Museum of Arnea.
Did you know? Arnea used to be well known for its textiles as well as a its tradition in producing impressive, handmade carpets and blankets from wool, cotton and silk.
Geometrically classic designs such as “krikela”, the “scissored sun” and other techniques recorded in the rest of Macedonia and Thrace, such as the “thilota” and “with the nail”, dominate the multicoloured rooms. The dominant design is the “calligraphic” Arnean carpets that are mainly used in the decoration of the walls.

ONE TO EXPLORE! The chapel of Panagia Faneromeni.
Its known as ‘ picturesque’ since it boasts both an amazing location in front of the sea and marvellous wall paintings of the 16th century AD.
On the walls of the church, visitors can see the beautiful frescoes from the 16th century, still preserved today. If one observes the holy icon of Virgin Mary made from marble, one can see the marks of feet… likely to belong to the base of a pagan statue which was removed and sanctified with the image of Virgin Mary.
Nowadays, it's a popular location for orthodox weddings due to its magnificent location.
