Happy new year full of great hikes !
(Until January 31st, we may wish a happy new year ! - Jusqu'à la Sainte Marcelle, tu souhaites l'année nouvelle! )

Talking about hikes, Brittany just won a prize : the French favorite hiking trail for 2023.
Trail GR37 "Coeur de Bretagne" goes inland over 780 kilometers from Mont Saint Michel to Crozon peninsula (GR34 is usually more famous, going all along the Breton coastline).

To be precise, the section from Mont St Michel to Fougères won the prize.

See you soon along Breton trails !

A tightrope walker crossed the bay of Mont St Michel from the dam to the steeple of the abbey!

The wire was 2.2km long, it took him more than two hours. After a small fall at the beginning, he started again and reached his goal. He broke the world record!

We react because we have special links with Ukraine and Russia. Because it is not possible to keep silent in front of even more catastrophic situations that could happen.

People in our invaluable democracies here should understand the emergency to stop the conflict, so that Ukraine remains a free and independent country. And for the peace of all. The longer the war, the worse the consequences.

Ukrainians show an incredible resistance and teach at the same time a lot of lessons.

Another key to end this war of the past is to support courageous Russian people to face their destiny once again and expel Putin and his "leaders" (high and low level ones, who followed him in his dream of old imperialism without looking at history, confiscating more and more media and freedoms in their own country, confiscating more money for their high tech weapons instead of improving health, education, infrastructures, technologies, accommodation,...). Putin has already crossed too many red lines. He can no longer lead Russia after the disaster he has led the whole country to, and the disasters he has already committed in other conflicts.

BUT this is PUTIN'S WAR, NOT RUSSIA's WAR.
And even less that of the young Russian generations. If this goes on too long, all Russia will bear a heavy burden for years to come. And a good part of the world will return to the "cold" war, with a thirst for revenge.

A part of Russian society must stop feeling attacked by half the world and reverse the history.
What some people do in our own democracies by the way : WE ALL have to keep that in mind, keep the memory alive and refuse temptations of extremists. No one can claim to have the truth. Nothing is all black or white. Of course, there have been mistakes everywhere, there are guilty people everywhere, on all sides.
There are extremists in all our countries, including in Ukraine too, who cannot claim for any power in the future organization.
This part of the Russian society must do this work too. Without humiliation or aggression from other countries. Otherwise the same history will repeat again and again... there or elsewehere in 10, 20 or 50 years...

Of course, everyone thinks they have better things to do, that the money would be better spent elsewhere. Certainly. But now, the situation that our leaders, our companies, and ourselves did not want to see before is here in front of us. If we want to put an end to the excessive and useless armament race, to the permanent threats, we must seriously move forward, now.

And then, as soon as possible, we can return to much more essential things!

We wish you a happy and healthy new year, full of delicacies, great ideas and strolls !

Gastronomy along the Emerald coast

A few restaurants in the area represent the French and Breton cuisine at a very high level.
It is well illustrated again : the young chef Hugo Roellinger was just awarded the title of best French chef of the year by Gault & Millau.

His restaurant Le Coquillage already shows 2 stars in the Michelin guide (his renowned father Olivier used to have 3!). It is ideally located in an old manoir, in St Méloir des Ondes, near Cancale, right in front of the bay of Mont St Michel.

Last but not least, his priority is to serve local food, including vegetables and aromatics from its own garden, local seaweed, and supporting sustainable fishing.

Ken Follett and the Cathedral in Dol de Bretagne

Dol de Bretagne, a town between St Malo and Rennes, has a rich history and heritage to protect. Among other medieval roots and links (royal Stuart family, Arthurian legends...), Dol has an impressive cathedral built in the 13th century. Dol used to host the archbishopric of Brittany.
Unfortunately time is merciless and the cathedral needs urgent restoration work!

After the fire in Notre Dame in Paris, Welsh writer Ken Follett decided to give the royalties after his book "Notre Dame" to contribute to the works in Dol de Bretagne.
Nice gesture !

It is winter solstice. For the Celts it was one of the main celebrations of the year. The night is the longest, but it is especially the time when the sun resists better : it is the beginning of the triumph of light over darkness.
And this sounds special this year. Let's hope for a new light coming. In La Roche aux Fées at least there was a beautiful sunrise ! Well, a few clouds prevented from lightening the background slab... but maybe it occurs next year !!

Biking in Brittany

Brittany is well represented in the last French rating for cities told to be pleasant for cycling (vote by riders). Among cities with more than 200 000 inhabitants, Nantes is the 2nd and Rennes the 3rd in France (even if there is still much to improve, of course !). In other categories, Lorient, St Lunaire and Séné are very well rated.

Mont Saint Michel sometimes hosts some concerts in the unique setting of the abbey church. The acoustic mostly sublimates classical music, for example during the Via Aeterna festival, but not only.
In September 2019, a famous French singer, Laurent Voulzy, performed twice. You may hear some of his popular tunes played during these special concerts. Among others, he was accompanied by traditional Breton musicians : bagadoù of Cesson-Sévigné and St Brieuc (local pipe bands).

Breton and Gallo languages

Brittany historically has two languages : Breton and Gallo.

Breton (ar brezhoneg) is a celtic language, spoken on the west coast of Brittany, in a way much similar to Welsh or Cornish.

Gallo is a romance language, inherited from latin language, which evolved in Gaul towards oïl languages : picard, poitevin, gallo, or french for example! It is "spoken" on the eastern side of a line roughly going from St Brieuc to Vannes.
Let's say gallo is at a great risk of disappearing, like many langages... but there are some irreducible Gallo speakers trying to defend and gather it !
In September, in Rennes and around, takes place the "Mil Goul" festival, a great opportunity to hear what Gallo sounds like and to (re-)discover that France has many more languages than French.

Gouel Breizh 2019 - Fête de la Bretagne

From May 17th till 26th, it is the annual festival of Breton culture. Of course there will be many events organized in every corner of Brittany, but not only : Paris, Dublin, Bratislava, Sao Paulo, Montréal, Shanghai also participate!

It is the opportunity to discover traditional and modern Breton music and dances. To hear the Breton language, watch documentaries, see pictures... or just meet some Breton people all around the world (a nation of travelers!).

Corsair Surcouf's pistols were just retrieved !

Robert Surcouf is one of the most famous characters in the history of Saint Malo. He is even often called the king of corsairs in France. This official "piracy" was one of the main activities of the city.
Last year two of his precious pistols had been stolen in the museum. And they were finally found again not far away, across the bay of Mont St Michel, by a history nut in Granville.
Beyond all the feats related to Surcouf's career, his life still is hectic : these guns had already been snatched in the 1960s...

Swimming moon in Rennes (again!)

Swim underneath the full moon at the swimming pool Saint Georges. Until January 28th, it is a unique opportunity to discover a very accurate model of the moon with valleys and craters. On this 7-meter helium filled moon, 1 centimeter represents 5 kilometers of the moon. There will be a sleepless night on January 27th.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Tud-B0KWP8

This installation by a British artist was already presented last July in this historical swimming pool (art deco monument with Odorico's mosaics, typical in Rennes). It even helped the pool to be ranked as the 9th craziest design in the world by Architectural Digest, for a short time (https://windermerepremier.wordpress.com/2017/11/01/10-of-the-craziest-pool-designs-in-the-world/).

From October, 4th till 14th, this music festival is back in Rennes and in towns around as well. It is a very eclectic festival, talking about music styles (electro, French chanson, rock, gypsy, cumbia...) but also atmosphere in concert halls or bars, with already famous bands (Les ogres de Barback, Debout sur le zinc...) or fresh ones.

Celtic harp is a traditional instrument not only in Ireland, Scotland or Wales but also in Brittany. In the early Middle Ages, it was the instrument of bards. Some bards were even attached to the court of princes and dukes.
After a period of decline for the harp, a new interest appeared in the 19th century, during the romanticism period. In the last few decades, Alan Stivel largely contributed to make the instrument popular again in Brittany. Now other artists contribute : Cecile Corbel, Myrdhin, Gwenaël Kerleo...

The celtic harp is one of the traditional instruments in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and of course Bretagne too. It was the instrument of bards in the early Middle Ages, some of them having a high social status and related to the court of princes and dukes.

Finistere parish closes

Going to Brittany is the opportunity to discover cultural specificities and architectural curiosities: parish closes and churchyards are part of them. During a period of prosperity, towns competed in showing their faith and illustrating scenes from the Bible. Such calvaries could be called stone comics nowadays! These impressive 400-year old monuments are especially located in a very limited area, named "enclosures road" (route des enclos), in the northern part of Finistere.
An event not to miss is the illumination of some of them at night, in summer!

Both Breton music and language are very lively. Our traditional celtic music evolves, it's greatly enriched with various influences.
When celtic and punk music meet, it gives an explosive cocktail of insubordination. It is no wonder that punk culture was quite active in Bretagne, and still is!

You can get an idea of what it sounds like, with the group "Les Ramoneurs de Menhirs". Since 2006, they have been touring France, Europe or Quebec, mixing traditional instruments, Breton language and conscious lyrics.
