The Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) is a leopard subspecies native to Sri Lanka. Classified as Endangered by IUCN, the population is believed to be declining due to numerous threats including poaching for trade and human-leopard conflicts. No subpopulation is larger than 250 individuals.
The Sri Lankan leopard has a tawny or rusty yellow coat with dark spots and close-set rosettes, which are smaller than in Indian leopards. Male Leopard is larger than the females and the tails are much longer too. Female leopard are measured averaged a weight of 29 kg and had head-to-body-length of 3 ft 5 in. Males averaged 56 kg with a 3 ft 2 in long tail. In Ancient times Sri Lankan leopards have been found throughout the island. These habitat types can be broadly categorized as arid zone, dry zone & wet zone.
The Sri Lankan Leopard is rapidly declining due to habitat loss and hunting for trade and due to pest control. On the other hand the Sri Lankan leopard is classified as “Near Threatened” by the IUCN.
There are records of over six specimens of leopards being poached in areas around national parks in their natural habitat.
