The Tao of Hope This is a page for the blog, "The Tao of Hope" (thetaoofhope.com), which belongs to freelance journalist and traveler Hope Loudon. Milne’s characters.

This blog belongs to freelance journalist and traveler Hope Loudon. The name comes from Hope’s love of Benjamin Hoff’s The Tao of Pooh which explains Taoism with the help of A.A. In Chinese, Tao (道), literally means “way.” Therefore, this blog’s content will focus on the way of Hope, and on her journey. Perhaps it is also a bit of a pun because of the literal meaning of the word “Hope.”

Hope inte

nds, through her travels and blog, to discover her own talents and desires, and to overcome her challenges to connect with her emotions and true self. She has her own Pandora’s box to open, and she would like to face what it contains with strength and authenticity. Since traveling is much like childhood in terms of new experiences, simple pleasures, and daunting first steps, she also hopes that her journey will connect her with her inner-child which she has previously not really allowed to play. At the same time, Hope is a journalist with a passion for serious news and global problems such as the environment, human rights, international justice, and the economy. She received her Bachelor’s of International Affairs from the University of Nevada, Reno in May of 2014. Before that, she spent eight months in Chengdu, China where she attended The Southwest University for Nationalities, worked as an Assistant Coordinator with the nonprofit Heifer International’s China branch, and wrote freelance environmental articles along with a monthly food column for the popular expat magazine, Hello Chengdu. She is presently interested in exploring the Psychology of trauma through journalism which preserves and validates oral histories, and gives victims a platform from which to tell their narrative which is such an important part of personal and societal healing.

I definitely haven't been keeping up with this blog, but I would like to ask for your opinions now. If you've heard or read any of my travel stories, which ones did you like the best? What did you find memorable? I am submitting three stories to an editor who is considering me as one of their writers. Please let me know your thoughts!

The cemeteries in Kyrgyzstan and spacious and sometimes very elaborate. Many of their mausoleums are visible from the roads. This is a cemetery at the base of Sulaiman-Too sacred mountain in Osh. The trail is lined with wild red poppies and other wild flowers, and it leads up to caves and petroglyphs (as well as the best views of the city).

I've been in China for the past month and having an amazing time! Most of my time has been spent catching up with friends, eating local cuisine I missed, and seeing the great sites. Still, whenever my travel partner will tolerate it, I also engage in my favorite past-time of grocery shopping. It's always fun to see what grocery stores have abroad, especially in China which is full of variety (two aisles of toilet paper!). Here's one of the tooth pastes I found today. I don't think they meant what it says.

I arrived in Beijing a few days ago and can just now access Facebook. At first I was annoyed to have a 3-year-old sitting next to me on the plane. He wouldn't settle down and spilled his first ever mango juice on my pants. He slept laying down with his feet on my lap and his mother was too exhausted to keep his sleeping body from kicking me. Then I simply decided to let it be and told her not to worry about it. When Kevin woke up, we became good friends. I played ipad games with him, let him sit on my lap, taught him how to pop his ears, listened to him, wrote his name for him, and let him look through my journals to find letters he recognized. He couldn't write his name, but he scribbled on a napkin and asked me to keep it. I have honored his request and will add it to my journal. If I happened to be sitting next to the bilingual future president, that napkin will be very valuable. If not, it's still a fine souvenir from the moment.

I bought round trip tickets to Beijing, China from Seattle for a remarkable $479. Then I received a 10 year, multiple entry visa to China. I will be leaving tomorrow. I'll blog from there, so stay tuned!

I just spent the last week in a small mountain village called El Lagartillo in Northern Nicaragua. I had an amazing time attending Spanish classes with Hijos Del Maiz, eating fresh organic meals straight from the farm, visiting various forest campos on ethnobotanical adventures, talking history with former Sandinistas, and looking for beautiful crystals. This waterfall belongs to the school which bought it (but is raising money for the full cost) in order to preserve it for the local communities. It has several shelves and pools you can't see. Stay tuned for my upcoming blog which will coincide with the release of Hijos Del Maiz's new fundraising webpage for El Salto.

Yesterday I saw some graffiti which read: "La Derecha Se Toman." If I'm translating it correctly in light of the former Nicaraguan dictator's method of denying the right to vote to everyone who is an "alcoholic" (a.k.a. political enemy), this means that the conservative party drinks! Haha! Kind of funny.

I have many, many blogs coming. One more on Indonesia for now and several about Nicaragua. I've been living in a very rural village where I had an amazing times and did a lot of cool stuff.

I was planning on going volcano boarding with Quetzaltreekers, but it was cancelled because only two people came. I wound up going with Bigfoot which pleasantly surprised me by dropping by a local school for a special fundraising event. I sledded down Cerro Negro Volcano on my ass, wiped out three times, and came in first place at 45 KMPH. French guy says they're gonna call me "Flash" now.

Here's a few things I've learned or re-learned since being in Nicaragua:
1. You don't want the top bunk.
2. Don't drink anything or buy any non-portable food while you are waiting for a long bus ride.
3. Always buy a Tona when you see it on draft for 20 cordobas.

I'm in Nicaragua now. I stumbled upon a festival celebrating San Jeronimo in Masaya yesterday and today. I also had a four hour conversation with an amazing woman named Xian who wrote the book "Why You Don't Need Shoes" about intuition. Check out her website: www.whyyoudon'tneedshoes.com

Last night, I finished my best story from Indonesia and submitted it to a travel writing contest. I have delayed putting it on the blog because I don't want to interfere with my ability to sell the rights. I expect to put it on the blog eventually, but I might try to publish it on another platform first.

I haven't forgotten about the rest of my blogs from Indonesia; they're just taking longer than anticipated. I'm submitting my funniest story to be published on a larger platform, but it's in the revisions stage now. I hope you'll read it when I post it. It will certainly entertain you. I'm off to Nicargua soon.

So, I took a break from my final Indonesia posts to share Taoist-inspired thoughts about something a little more universal. Here's why I love being last. http://thetaoofhope.com/2014/08/12/why-i-love-being-last/

This post is for the many people out there who think they are losing some socially-constructed game, or that they are last in some kind of unspoken competition with those around them. Maybe a lot o...

New blog post--Looking for Java on Java

"On the second floor deck of a building that is surrounded by trees and only accessible through a small alley (gang kecil) behind the book store Togo Mas, Klinik Kopi caters to a small but growing community of Jogja coffee enthusiasts. The setting is somewhat Cheers-like (in the sense that everyone knows your name), but without the bar stools and shoes (as is typical in Asia). Customers talk in small groups randomly scattered across the floor as they wait for their turn to take one of the coveted seats at Mas Pepang’s bar."

I am living on the island of Java for which the famous coffee is named. My housemate Anna is here to do preliminary research for a GIS mapping project on coffee. As an ethnobotany enthusiast and en...

Two posts on my visit to coffee plantations and Mt. Merapi are awaiting pictures, but my camera card reader is broken. I'll try to get them out soon. In other news, I am recovering from a terrible rash caused by a virus transmitted by insect bites, and I am trying to make plans for after USINDO's Program. Let me know if you have any cool ideas.

This weekend, I will officially be visiting a coffee plantation. My friend Anna is researching them, and I might try to do an article. It's the first plantation for both of us, and we are going with a local team of coffee enthusiasts from Klinik Kopi (a coffee bar that sources and roasts its own beans). Expect a blog about it soon.
