Every time we go to Morocco, we're amazed that we can hop on a plane and, in less than two hours, land somewhere completely different. It never stops being exactly what we crave - different culture, food, sights, smells, and a shake-up from everyday life.
On this trip to Marrakech, we visited with Megan's dad and spent four very full days visiting palaces, trying new restaurants, avoiding the cobras in the square, and going on tours with the guides that we regularly work with. As usual, we came back inspired with updated recommendations, a few cool new spots to share, and a handful of very trusted guides and partners.
If you've always been intrigued by Morocco, our 9 day Designed Trip includes the red city of Marrakech, a 4-day Sahara desert excursion, and the maze-like medina of Fes, all based on our personal travel experiences and trusted local guides. Spring and fall are the best times to visit, so give us a shout when you're ready to start planning! 🇲🇦 https://www.cohicatravel.com/morocco-mystic-medinas--sahara-sunsets.html

Let's just say that it has been a very strange week! On Monday, when all of Spain and Portugal lost power, we were just getting in the car with Ryan's parents to drive to Javea, a small town on the Costa Blanca. We drove through an eerie city with no traffic lights, without GPS navigation, or data on our phones. We finally arrived at our hotel after a few wrong turns (how do you even use a map anymore?!) and the hotel still didn't have power, or water, since their water was accessed with electrical pumps. We ended up spending the evening eating bocadillos, chatting, and reading by candlelight.

The electricity finally came on overnight, but the wifi was still out all through Tuesday, so we couldn't work, other than sending emails on our phones. So, we decided to climb Montgo, the mountain that overlooks our hotel. We spent a half day sweating and scrambling to the summit, probably something we wouldn't have done if we had our noses stuck in our laptops.

Sure, we're behind with work. Yup, we'll probably have to get some things done over the weekend. But being forced to disconnect and getting to spend some time with Ryan's parents, and with each other, was a pretty great memory from Spain's massive blackout.

We're still in post-travel mode, working on mentally switching away from palm covered beaches and toward quaint cobbled lanes. We're planning to spend the next 4-5 months soaking up spring and summertime in and around Europe, which is hands-down the best and most dreamy time of the year. So much so that we've just launched a brand NEW Designed Trip to one of our all-time favorite countries, FRANCE. This trip is perfect for anyone who dreams about posh Parisian sidewalk cafes, slow sips of rosé in sunny Provencal squares, and rocky coastlines tumbling into the turquoise sea. It includes some of our all-time favorite french locations: Paris, Provence and the French Riviera and offers a perfectly planned 10-day itinerary with (our usual) culturally-rich experiences, incredible food and wine, seamless transportation and beautiful boutique hotels. Because if the question is should you spend summer this year in France, the answer is always oui oui!

We've just gotten home after a month in Southeast Asia and are completely heartbroken to see the devastation in Thailand, China, and especially Myanmar, following the 7.7 earthquake last week. If there's one thing that travel gifts us, it is the ability to see the world through other people's eyes, to see how other people live, and to experience a taste of daily life in a place far from home. This region has some of the most kind, peaceful, and giving people we have encountered anywhere in the world, and to think of the degree of suffering and loss that is currently taking place there is devastating. In Myanmar, more than 3,000 people are dead with thousands still missing; sacred temples and historical sites have crumbled, all in the midst of an ongoing civil war and cuts in international aid.

If there is anything you can do to help, the organizations below are raising funds to directly help the people impacted. Sometimes, these places feel far away and out of reach, but these moments remind us that the world is small, and in the end, we are all the same. Thank you. 🙏

It's always bittersweet returning home after so long - we really get into life on the road, the simplicity of the day-to-day (no cooking, chores or errands!) and the stimulation that comes with constant change, new people and living with a different culture, language and food (we absolutely love it). But there's a comfort to home too, and we've been slowly getting back into our daily routines, cooking dinners at home, running in the park, playing padel on weekends and strolling the city center with our pup. It's helpful that spring seems to have sprung while we were away, and Valencia is starting to feel more vibrant, with chatty sunny terraces and flowers filling the Turia park. Going away and coming back always serves as a nice reminder of how much we love it here - our apartment, our friends, the city - and we're fully ready to embrace our busiest period of the year, finalizing loads of exciting summer and fall trips. Vamos! 🇪🇸

🇻🇳 Vietnam is a place that we can't stop returning to. It was the first country on our round-the-world trip back in 2015 and the first place where we were both wide-eyed with the excitement of somewhere totally new, taking in all the cultural differences, new food, flavors, and language. We spent almost a month there, taking slow buses and noisy trains all the way up the coast, relishing in the adventure and newness of it all. We were excited and in love, and it may just be where we both fell in love with traveling too. So, let's just say there's some nostalgia here.

We try to drop by every time we're in Asia, and although this is a short trip, we quickly make up for lost time with the amount of food consumed. We eat veggie pho for breakfast, hit two different banh mi stands for lunch, and drink an indulgent number of sweetened Vietnamese coffees. At night, we meet up with one of our Hanoi partners for a private street food tour, sitting on twelve inch high red plastic stools and digging into veggie versions of the most popular street dishes. We'd like to say that there was more to our final few days in Asia than eating, but the truth is, there wasn't. We walked a lot, stopped by train street, browsed some boutiques, and circled Hoàn Kiếm Lake, taking in the delightful motorbike filled chaos and palpable energy between meals. Boarding a flight home after more than a month in Asia is always a sad moment, but at least our bellies are full and we have bags of coffee and matcha kitkats in our carry-ons, so no complaints here.

After leaving the Philippines, we had a flight booked to Hanoi for the final week of our trip. Our plan was to hang in the city for a few days, checking in with some of our partners from our Vietnam Designed Trip, before going up to Ninh Binh for a few nights. But then we saw the forecast. Northern Vietnam was expected to get a cold front with multiple days in the mid-50's, something that felt nearly impossible after 3+ weeks of hot tropical days in the Philippines. So, we pivoted, and at the last minute, bought ourselves a cheap flight to Bangkok for the weekend instead.
It was a great move, and we forgot how much we love Bangkok! The towering skyscraper hotels, the temples, and obviously, the FOOD! We stayed at two different hotels that we typically book for clients and had the chance to re-experience some of the tours in our Thailand Designed Trip including a street-food walking tour and an off-the-beaten path bike tour of the Thonburi district, to see how a community of people live among the canals that surround the city center. The air was warm, the food was delicious, and by the time we boarded our flight to Hanoi, the forecast was looking much more in our favor for the final few nights in Vietnam.

Siargao! 🇵🇭 The 6th and final island on our Philippines adventure is possibly the one we'd been looking forward to the most. We usually try to enter into every new travel experience without expectations (this can make or break a trip!), but this island has been seriously hyped lately in the travel world. It's considered the surfing capital of the Philippines, and people are calling it the next Bali, which in SE Asia, is quite the thing.

Personally, we've never met a surf town that we didn't love. We've come to really appreciate the laidback energy, healthy food, cheap massages and cool people that surf destinations attract, so with this in mind, we booked 6 long days in Siargao to relax, catch-up on work, and of course, surf.🤙

We definitely fall into the beginner surfer category, but after our first lesson in Lombok, Indonesia, a few years ago, we were hooked on the adrenaline rush and physical challenge that comes with this easier-than-it-looks sport. The notorious Cloud 9 break in Siargao has waves for all levels, and although a bit crowded, is exactly what you picture, with surf schools lining the palm-covered shoreline and beach bars selling smoothie bowls. We didn't surf as much as we wanted to due to some end of rainy season storms, but we loved all six glorious days on this little island, and felt like it was the perfect end to our island-hopping adventure. 🇵🇭❤️

Interested in visiting the Philippines? We'll be developing a brand new Designed Trip when we get home based on the hotels and activities that we've visited and experienced and the local contacts that we've made over the past month. Stay tuned! 🌴

Palawan! 🇵🇭 Our visit to island number 5 on our Philippines adventure was a short and sweet one. The town, El Nido, is set below towering limestone cliffs and is arguably the most famous location in the country, more for the mind-blowing natural landscapes that surround it than the town itself.

With only two nights here, we rent a private boat with some new pals to see all the surrounding lagoons, hidden coves, and hard-to-reach beaches. The contrast of the black limestone rock formation with the white sand and turquoise water is exactly how you envision paradise. Even after bring spoiled with a fair amount of palm-covered islands over the past few days, we're still completely in awe - it's like being on a movie set, or at Disneyland, something that seems fake it's so pretty.

We leave the island as the sun is rising, from a one-room airport with a single gate and a small propeller plane parked outside the door. Pretty wiped out after 6 days of sun, swimming and socializing, we're very excited for our next stop: 6 long days on the island of Siargao to relax, surf, and catch up with work.

There's a bittersweet feeling on the last day of something you know will stay with you. You want to hold on to it, try everything possible to savor it, but know that more and more distance is growing between this moment and your future self. We spent our final night at sea laughing with new friends over badly sung karaoke and sipping cold beer around a beach bonfire, this special experience strangely bonding us together quickly. Waking up with the sun in our little raised beach hut, we grab a cup of coffee and stroll the quiet beach at dawn, not feeling ready to go back to real life just quite yet.

After breakfast, we ride in kayaks out to the boat, cruising away from camp and to our final island stop. This island is the definition of paradise, with palm tree lined white sand beaches and almost glowing turquoise water. We spend the afternoon squeezing in a few final games of volleyball, spotting trigger fish and moray eels, and hanging with a family of friendly island pigs before boarding the boat for our final meal together and channel crossing to El Nido.

We've never been more excited to check in to a hotel, but after our laundry is sorted and we've indulged in a hot shower and a nap in the cozy bed, we find ourselves missing the boat, the group, and the feeling of being disconnected and far away. It was a short, sweet, and somewhat intense experience, and it's strange for it to end just as fast as it began.

We have a couple of days to explore El Nido before making our way to our 6th and final island, Siargao.

Waking up on a tiny island in the middle of an archipelago somewhere between Coron and El Nido in the Philippines. We don't have data, or wifi and it hasn't occurred to us to even look at our phones, except to take a photo or two to be sure we remember this exact moment. 24 hours into this experience and we're reminded of one of the reasons we love traveling. We are completely here, in the present moment, our usually-buzzing minds quiet, and our to-do list tucked away. This, in itself, is pretty incredible. Add in the early morning sun hitting the water, the quietness of the island, and the sweet mango we're eating with our morning coffee, and we're two very happy glampers.

After leaving camp, we visit a remote island with a small village that consists of a little school, one shop, a church and a basketball court. Every kid we pass waves and screams hello, we see fish drying in the sun and food being prepared outside on fires before playing a game of basketball with the boat crew (all who have serious game, especially in flip flops). Back on the boat, we stop at a nearby island known for sea turtle sightings. We've been spoiled with our time living in Hawaii, but love seeing all of the Europeans on board lose their minds after seeing a turtle. The afternoon is spent sipping cold beers between beach volleyball games, jumping off the top level of the boat, and snorkeling off shore of the island before cruising into our camp for the night. After the sun goes down, we sing karaoke and sit around a beach bonfire, the day's sun and adventures resulting in a surprisingly peaceful sleep on the floor of our little raised hut. 🤍
