MANDARIN ESSENTIAL OIL
Continuing the citrus theme... Mandarins (also known as Tangerines in English speaking countries) probably originated in China.
In France the oil is considered to be the "childrens's remedy". It is used for relieving stomach upsets in babies and children (note, it should not be taken internally). It is also recommended for soothing restlessness, especially for children who are hyperactive.
It is also a safe oil to use during pregnancy - use in a massage blend or in a bath.

SWEET ORANGE ESSENTIAL OIL
Sweet oranges were introduced to Europe by Portuguese explorers around the 16th Century. The essential oil is good for settling the digestive system and can help with constipation, flatulence and irritable bowel. It should not be used internally (an orange could be eaten instead) - instead use it in a massage blend, as a compress or in a bath.
In addition the oil is mildly sedative and anti-depressant, and may help with insomnia. It is a nice oil to use as a winter bath oil.

LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL
This photo was taken in Spain last week - lemon trees produce fruit all year round. Most people will know of the historical use of lemon juice for protecting English sailors from scurvy due to its Vitamin C content.
As with all essential oils lemon has many uses. One important one is its immune system stimulating properties, it stimulates the production of white blood cells which fight off bacterial invasion.
Another use is the treatment of warts and verrucae - one drop can be used, daily, directly on the wart or verruca.
It should be noted that lemon essential oil is phototoxic so it should not be used on the skin before exposure to sunlight. It may also cause sensitisation in some people so should be used with care.

First Aid Foot Cream: After a couple of weeks on holiday, wearing sandals on alternating sun-baked dusty ground and wet grass, my heels were starting to crack and feel sore. Using what I had available I made a cream from Aloe Vera Gel with Lavender and Tee-Tree essential oils (mixed up in a little glass jar, that used to hold tomato ketchup, that I had recycled from the ferry!).

On a trip out on my bike yesterday I cam across some Wild Thyme which made me think about the Thyme essential oil we use in aromatherapy (which is distilled from the Common Thyme species).
Thyme has an interesting history - it was used as a medicinal plant by early civilisations around the Mediterranean and is traditionally used in cooking.
Before World War 1 thyme oil was used in hospitals as a disinfectant and antiseptic It was sprayed on the clothes of soldiers in the Crimean war to protect against disease and lice. Going back to Roman times, Roman soldiers took baths that were infused with thyme before going into battle.
A common use of Thyme essential oil today is helping to treat respiratory infections with baths, massage or inhalations. As it stimulates the circulation it is also good for people who are fatigued, depressed, lethargic or those recovering from illness.
