Iceland Solar Eclipse Trip: August 2026

The first vehicle is full (4 people) and am looking for others who might be interested in joining us on a 10-day self-drive trip around southern Iceland in August of 2026, the climax of which will be viewing the total solar eclipse on August 12th. If you are interested, you can see more information on my website or contact me with questions you might have.

In August of 2026 a total eclipse of the sun will be visible from western Iceland. I will be leading a 10-day, self-drive tour of Iceland with a grand finale

06/10/2024

I have four trips planned over the next 2 years and am looking for adventurous travelers to accompany me.

Amazon River: (Jan-Feb, 2025) I will be "hitchhiking" down the Amazon River from Iquitos Peru to Macapa Brazil by cargo ship. Inexpensive and definitely not luxury travel, but a unique experience. No limit to the number who can join me, but at least 1 or 2 so we can watch each other's backs. The adventure level is high for this one.

Galapagos Islands: (May 20-27, 2025) I will be leading a photography-centric cruise around the Islands. Even though it is really designed for photographers, the major difference between this and any other cruise in the Galapagos is that we will be going ashore each morning before sunrise and then back ashore just before sunset. This is a mid-range cruise both in terms of luxury and price. Will have the final details next week but expect the price to be about $3500 for the 8 days/7 nights.

South Africa: (Fall, 2025) This will be a self-drive trip and I would love to have 2-3 people join me to keep the cost down. I have not planned out any of the details, but expect the trip to last about 3-5 weeks. We can discuss timing if you are interested. Mainly a photo trip for culture and animals. Whale watching is also good in South Africa during the fall. Another high adventure trip.

Iceland: (August 6-13, 2026) This is an Iceland photo trip planned to coincide with the total solar eclipse that is visible from western Iceland on August 12th. It is another self-drive trip, and can accommodate as many people as want to go just by adding more vehicles. By booking now, we can lock on 2024 prices that will surely skyrocket as the date for the eclipse gets closer. I am going to book this next week for 4 people (3 + me) so would really like to hear from anyone who is interested.

You can comment, DM me, or contact me via email or WhatsApp.

The photo cruise I have been organizing for May of next year is just about finalized. I have partnered with Rebecca Adventure Travel to handle the logistics and payments. That way I don't have to deal with the money and people wanting to sail with us don't have to worry about sending money to just some guy on Facebook.

Within the next week, I will be making a formal announcement with all the details, price, and schedule. I want to emphasize that this is a cruise really designed around the needs of photographers, but anyone wanting a great experience on a small-boat cruise would certainly have a great time.

The boat, the Danubio Azul, can accommodate up to 16 passengers (me + 15 others). I selected this boat for comfort, their willingness to create a cruise specifically for photographers, and because the crew really impressed me when I met with them a couple of weeks ago. The boat has 8 cabins all together. There are three cabins for couples who will share a berth. Those double cabins include a second twin-sized bed that could be used if they wish to bring another family member or close friend. There is one "matrimonial" cabin with a queen-sized bed, two single cabins, and two double cabins that have two twin-sized beds. If you do the math you will see that there are beds for up to 17, but the boat's permit from the National Park is for a maximum of 16. Here is a website with information about the boat: https://danubiogalapagos.com/

Also note, the boat is equipped and configured to offer diving, but we will not be diving on this trip.

If you have any questions, you can DM me, email me ([email protected]), or send me a message via WhatsApp (+593 99 436 5652). If you are in the US, you can text me on my number there (425-269-6466)

I have just about finalized the details of the Galapagos photo cruise I posted about earlier. We will be visiting 6 different islands. The prices will be between $3100 and $3400/person for 8 days, depending on the cabin type. Dates are May 20-27, 2025. I will be posting full details in another week or so.
Below is a link to the boat that I have selected. You will see that they offer either naturalist or diving cruises. For this cruise, we will not be diving. This boat is not the most luxurious. If you are thinking Carnival Cruise Lines's level of luxury, you will be disappointed. The boat is comfortable and well-maintained (I had a local mechanic inspect it), the food is very good, the staff is great, and they are willing and able to accommodate the special needs of photographers. The boat has wifi and AC in all cabins.

There are a couple of things about this cruise that differentiate it from the typical cruise in the Galapagos Islands.
First, since this is a photography-specific cruise, we will go ashore about 30 minutes before sunrise each morning and spend 2-4 hours shooting. We will then go back ashore (possibly in a different place) about 1 hour before sunset. Most cruises put you ashore at about 9 AM, which is not the best for photography. In between shooting sessions, there will be time for relaxing, snorkeling, swimming, or kayaking.
Second, this boat has a special permit from the National Park allowing it to modify its itinerary daily. Itineraries must be submitted and approved by the Park well in advance and most cruises must adhere to that itinerary. For this cruise, if conditions change, we will have the flexibility to alter our plans.
Third, is the price. If you do a Google search and find a cruise, the prices are going to be well above $4000. Some are up to $1500/day. Of course, the most luxurious boats charge more, but mostly those prices are jacked up by the company arranging the tours. If you go directly to the boat owners, much lower prices can be arranged. I am not making any money from this and I pay the same as everyone else.
If anyone is interested or has any questions, please feel free to contact me through FB, WhatsApp or email.

I have a draft itinerary for a 10-day, 10-person, self-drive trip in Iceland that would coincide with the total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026. You can view the itinerary here:

nathanlakephotography.com/iceland

The cost of the trip would be about $3650/person (double occupancy). Here is a list of the included/not-included items.

Something not mentioned in the itinerary is the current volcanic activity which I am excited to see. The most spectacular of which is along the proposed route.

• 9 nights’ accommodation (comfort) with breakfast included
• 2x Rental cars (Option A, B or C) for 9 days with unlimited mileage/CDW & VAT
• WiFi hotspot in your rental car for easy internet access
• 1 extra driver for each rental car
• Optional private information meeting with our travel consultant in Reykjavik before your tour starts
• Handwritten, detailed map with route, sightseeing recommendations and accommodations highlighted
• Written guides of the regions you will be visiting
• 4x Private airport transfers between RKV and KEF airport (max. 8 pax for each transfer)
• 24-hour emergency service

On August 12th, 2026, a total solar eclipse will be visible from western Iceland. If I organized a 10-day tour of Iceland that culminated with viewing the eclipse, would anyone out there be interested in joining me?

Every time I see a motorcycle from Brazil, it is a BMW. Considering the price of BMWs I have always wondered why they are so popular in Brazil. Today, I asked a rider of a BMW 1250 with Brazilian plates and I got my answer.

BMW make motorcycles in Brazil which are only allowed to be sold in that country and at a much lower price than BMWs in the rest of the world.

I've now been on the road for 5 months and 4 days. Think of it this way, if you get two weeks of vacation every year, I've just taken 10 years worth of vacations.

It has been an amazing trip thus far. Two months in Peru, 3 weeks in Bolivia, one month in northern Chile, and just over a month (and still counting) in southern Argentina. I am now in the city of Bariloche Argentina and in a few days I will cross over into Chile and work my way back north to Santiago. That will pretty much take care of all the southern half of South America. My original plan was then to do the northern half of South America, but I've changed my mind...at least for this trip. Allow me to explain.
I've been living in Ecuador since September of 2022. The whole idea for moving there was that it gave me a good starting point for my exploration of South America. Now, in light of events over the past 2 years, I am reassessing that choice and considering relocating.

In case you haven't been following Ecuador over the past 18 months, it's been a rough time for the country. I anticipate Ecuador having some significant financial and political difficulties over the next 5 years.

Obviously there's the recent issue with their raiding of the Mexican embassy. The consequences of this act are still unfolding, but the fallout could be considerable. While it is unlikely that Ecuador will be suspended from the UN, as requested by Mexico, there will almost certainly be financial consequences, both formal and informal.

Last year, in a general election, the people of Ecuador voted to cease oil exploration in the Amazon. While I fully support that idea from an environmental perspective, it is important to note that Ecuador’s government gets about 30% of its total revenue from that oil. If the government carries out the people’s will (it is unclear if that will happen), the national budget of Ecuador will need to be cut by 30%. I don’t see how a relatively poor nation can do that without significant impact on its citizenry. In an attempt to begin reconciling the new financial reality, Ecuador has raised the VAT (For those of you from the US, think of VAT as a national sales tax). I suspect that going forward it will be raised routinely. The price of gasoline is $2.40/gallon for regular and this is only possible due to a significant subsidy by the government. Two years ago Ecuador attempted to raise the price by $0.15 and the taxi and truck drivers shut down the country for a month. I don’t see how Ecuador can continue this level of subsidy and raising the price will almost certainly cause further unrest.

The Chinese have a significant presence in Ecuador, as they do in many small countries around the world, and they have major mining operations for various minerals and metals. Obviously, this generates revenue for Ecuador, but pressure is being brought by various activist groups to reduce Chinas access to mining there. At the same time, I would assume that the government of Ecuador will look for ways to increase the mining revenue and all of this could strain relations with China. The possible financial results are hard to foresee.

And with all of these things happening, there will almost certainly be a drop in both tourism and the number of foreigners choosing the expat life in Ecuador…further reducing the money coming into the country.

OK, so all of this has been to provide the context for what I will do next. After Santiago, I will continue northward and return back to Cuenca Ecuador. I will get an apartment on a short lease (probably about 6 months) while I plan another 6-month trip to explore the remaining countries of South America and evaluate other possible expat living locations. Asia, other Latin American countries, and a couple of locations in Europe are all possibilities.

Perhaps I will stay in Ecuador and perhaps I will go someplace else. Having the freedom to move around is a good thing. Any suggestions?
