Hip, hip, hooray! It’s World Hippo Day! (Not to sound cliché…) 😅🦛💦

Did you know a group of hippos is called a bloat? While these river giants often get a bad rap, they are undeniably powerful.

As one of Africa’s most territorial animals, hippos can reach speeds of 19 mph on land and are surprisingly swift in the water, using their powerful bodies to guide with ease.

We admire their chunky charm from a ~safe distance~ and, like all wildlife, respect their space.

Drop a 🦛 in the comments if you, too, have your leave-me-alone moments. 😉

Today is 💧🌍, a day to celebrate the vital role wetlands play in sustaining wildlife, ecosystems, and communities.

Zambia’s Bangweulu Wetlands—meaning “where the water meets the sky”—is one of Africa’s most important ecosystems.

Home to more than 400 bird species, including the elusive shoebill (1st photo), Bangweulu is also the only place black lechwe (4th photo) roam freely in Africa.

Thanks to conservation efforts led by and Zambian government agencies, wildlife is rebounding, sustainable fisheries are thriving, and local communities are shaping a future where people and nature coexist.

A visit to Bangweulu means you’ll experience a remote, untouched wilderness where you can see rare wildlife and conservation in action. 💙✨

In East Africa, January through March isn’t just a season—it’s a cradle of life! 🌍✨🥹

The plains come alive during one of the most magical times of the year, marked by an incredible baby boom among prey animals.

🐃 Witness wildebeest calves take their first steps.
🦓 See zebra foals grazing beside their herds.
🦌 Watch gazelle fawns learning to run within moments of birth.

While predators like lions 🦁 and leopards 🐆 give birth year-round, the abundance of prey during this season means their young are also more frequently seen.

Did you know that over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born during this time, many within just a few weeks? 🤯

The birthing season is an incredible reminder of nature’s resilience—there’s no better time to see the circle of life in action! 🌱✨

“Rescuing baby rhinos in need and preparing them for release back into the wild, where they belong”—that’s the mission of , the world’s first dedicated rhino orphan sanctuary. 🦏

With fewer than 30,000 rhinos left in the wild, this we’re spotlighting The Rhino Orphanage’s vital work to save these baby rhinos and restore them to their natural habitats.

Some quick facts:
🔴 Rhinos could become extinct within our lifetime.
🦏 Rhinos face extinction due to poaching, habitat loss, inbreeding, and fragmentation.
🚫 Rhinos are poached for their horns, which have no benefits for humans and are illegal.
💔 3 rhinos are poached daily in South Africa.
🌾 Rhino populations are fragmented as grasslands are lost to human development.

Wildlife conservation can mean many things—raising awareness, protecting habitats, or rescuing animals. For The Rhino Orphanage, it means building and maintaining safe facilities, employing and training dedicated caretakers, and staying 100% committed to protecting rhinos every single day of the year.

This year, they’re raising funds to secure water resources, including equipping a new borehole, deepening an existing one, and setting up a rainwater catchment system to combat the impacts of drought.

Together, we can ensure a future for rhinos. Support The Rhino Orphanage’s mission by donating at https://donorbox.org/giving-tuesday-2024-water-is-life, and visit therhinoorphanage.org to learn more. Every action helps ensure rhinos are more than a memory. 💚💧🌱

On this , we recognize the vital importance of creating opportunities for girls to lead and thrive. 💜

A shining example of this is the amazing women of the Female Ranger Programme, who are making waves in conservation and gender equality in Africa.

These all-women teams are doing more than just monitoring natural resources; they’re actively tackling wildlife crime and fostering a deeper connection to the environment. By stepping into these roles, they show young girls that they can be powerful leaders and agents of change in their communities.

The inaugural unit launched in Botswana, with plans for more teams in both Botswana and Zimbabwe. Their efforts not only protect biodiversity but also create opportunities for women who might not have access to such roles otherwise.

As these strong female rangers pave the way, they’re building a legacy of empowerment that will resonate for years to come. Their commitment highlights the essential role women play in preserving our planet and inspires young girls to dream big and pursue their passions.

The allure of a safari lies in the magical wildlife sightings you hope to make. While the Big 5 are spectacular, for those chasing the ‘unicorns’ of wildlife viewing, is your ultimate destination. 📸

Tswalu is renowned for being the best private game reserve to spot seven of Africa’s most elusive and rare species (pictured in order):

1. Brown Hyena
2. Aardvark
3. Pangolin
4. Aardwolf
5. Bat-Eared Fox
6. African Wild Cat
7. Cape Fox

Among these, the pangolin is the ultimate ‘mythical’ sighting, due to how incredibly rare it is to see them in the wild.

As the largest private game reserve in South Africa, Tswalu offers a unique challenge. Spotting these elusive animals requires patience, the skill of experienced trackers, and a touch of luck, influenced by the time of year and weather conditions.

All seven species are nocturnal, so your chances of seeing them increase dramatically during night drives—one of the many advantages of staying at a private reserve like Tswalu.

With the bucket list opportunity to encounter these elusive creatures, Tswalu truly stands out as the perfect safari destination. 🌍✨

Happy 90th Birthday to the remarkable Dr. Jane Goodall! 🎉🐒

Today, we celebrate the incredible legacy of a woman who reshaped our understanding of the natural world and our place within it. Dr. Goodall pioneered the study of chimpanzees in Tanzania, choosing to immerse herself in their world rather than bring them into the laboratory. Her revolutionary approach revealed astonishing insights into the complexity of chimpanzee society and their remarkable cognitive abilities, including the use of tools – a behavior once believed to be unique to humans.

Through her groundbreaking research, Jane challenged the notion of human superiority and fostered empathy and connection with our fellow inhabitants of this planet. Beyond her scientific contributions, she has been an unwavering advocate for conservation and wildlife protection through her organization, the Jane Goodall Institute.

On this special day, we honor Jane’s extraordinary life and monumental impact. 💚🌍💚
