The beautiful city of Basel, Switzerland has many facinating and captivating attributes. But one is of great interest since you can be in more than one place at once! Do you know where that is?
Basel’s Dreiländereck monument marks the exact point where the three neighboring countries — France, Germany and Switzerland — converge.

When you think of a canal lined city, your mind immediately will travel to Venice, Italy which is known for its iconic canals and picturesque bridges. But there is one city that has more bridges (and canals) than Venice. What is that city?

Amsterdam! Amsterdam used to be a small fishing village, but its proximity to the sea made it attractive for trade in the 1600s. The city grew quickly, and soon, the Dutch government began to build bridges and canals to help connect the different parts of Amsterdam. As a result, there are more than 1,200 bridges in Amsterdam today — more than three times the number in Venice. There are around twice as many miles of canals in Amsterdam, too. They’re lovely to walk over, but cruise under them on a canal boat for the best view. A bundle that includes a walking tour and a canal cruise lets you do both. Plus, you can take in the scenery and snap a few photos along the way.

There is one government agency that works especially hard on Christmas Eve, NORAD. Do you know what year NORAD started tracking Santa on Christmas Eve for children and adults worldwide?

NORAD has been tracking Santa since 1955 when a young child accidently dialed the unlisted phone number of the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Operations Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, believing she was calling Santa Claus after seeing a promotion in a local newspaper. The entire story is heartwarming, we encourage you to look it up and read it.

Christmas is coming, and millions of children all over the world are busy writing letters addressed to Santa’s Workshop at 1 North Pole Way. The hidden location of Santa’s workshop is, however, just one of the North Pole’s many mysteries. Its icy, inhospitable landscape at the top of the world has captured the imaginations of explorers, artists, scholars and adventurers for centuries, and scientists are still hunting for new discoveries that have lain hidden beneath the ice for eons. While we would never dream of revealing the secret location of Santa’s workshop,We will see if you have the answer to this fun fact about the North Pole.
Just like Christmas, there is one thing that only happens once a year at the North Pole. Do you know what that is?
Picture the Earth spinning on its axis like a top. Sunrise occurs in the morning, when the part of Earth that you live on spins towards the sun. Sunset happens in the evening, as your section of the Earth spins away from the sun. Since the North Pole is located at the very top of the planet, its position relative to the sun doesn’t change as the planet spins. That means the North Pole sees only one sunrise a year!

At the North Pole, the sun rises during the spring equinox in March, followed by six months of perpetual daylight. The sun then sets during the autumnal equinox in September, followed by six months of perpetual darkness. Over the course of a single day, the sun appears to circle the North Pole without ever dipping below the horizon. This strange phenomenon occurs because the Earth orbits the sun on a slanted axis. From March to September, the north pole tilts to face the sun, then from September to March it tilts the other way.

It’s time for Tuesday Travel Trivia! There are never a shortage of fun and exciting things to do during the holiday season. The sights and sounds of festivals and light displays are a feast for the senses. But can you nameone of the most popular events to attend during the holiday season that span into various countries in the EU?
The answer is… the HOLIDAY MARKETS! We owe the tradition of Christmas markets in Europe to the tradition of Christmas markets in German-speaking regions of Europe where, during the Middle Ages, fairs, and markets opened for locals to stock up on necessities (primarily, meat) to keep them well-fed through the cold months of impending winter seasons. Travelers to cities like Munich, Frankfurt, Vienna, and Dresden brought the idea home to their own European hometown, thus beginning the tradition of the Wintermärkte, or “winter market.” With more appeal came an increasing amount of creativity amongst the vendors, who joined butchers in town squares to sell fun and festive items such as children’s toys, woodcarvings, sweet seasonal treats, and homemade crafts—all of course, made with love by locals possessed by jolly the Christmas spirit.

Today, Europe’s sought-after Christmas markets continue to embody this traditional and cozy charm—where countless generations have come together to preserve the spirit and warmth of winter seasons. All over Europe, from the United Kingdom to the continent, travelers can celebrate the winter holidays in cities small and large, basking in the glow of snow-capped cathedrals and angelic choirs, from late November to January. C&O Travel can still make your holiday travel plans come true and book you into a marvelous holiday market vacation before year end! Let us know where you want to go, and we will do the rest!

There we many cities with missions in the state of California but can you name the city that boasts of the ONLY mission that has twin bell towers?

It is the Santa Barbara Mission in Santa Barbara, California. Here are some more fun facts about the Santa Barbara Mission. The Santa Barbara Mission is one of US’s astonishing shrines dating back to the 18th century. It is the only Franciscan mission that’s been ceaselessly operated since its establishing date in 1786. The church was founded on the Feast of Saint Barbara, who was martyred for her faith by her own father. Also known as Queen of the Missions, the church was founded to convert the indigenous Chumash tribe to Catholicism. It is the only mission that has two founding dates, because Father Junipero Serra passed away after he wrote the first founding date. The church was designed by copying from a book of architecture written in 27 B.C. Even today parts of the Mission’s aqueduct are still in use.

Not only does Santa Barbara get decked out for the holidays, it’s also whale-watching season! Migrating Pacific gray whales pass through the Santa Barbara Channel as they head back to Baja California. Visitors can spot them on one of the town’s many whale-watching tours. Fortunately, you won’t feel too frosty on the boat or at the city’s 38th Annual Parade of Lights on December 8.

Let C&O Travel book you a magical holiday stay in wonderful Santa Barbara this holiday season for a quick trip away!

In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday this week, instead of our usual Tuesday Travel Trivia, we are going to do some Tuesday Thanksgiving trivia! Are you ready?

Holidays aren’t always consistent throughout history. Thanksgiving is no exception. What month was Thanksgiving first celebrated?
Thanksgiving was originally celebrated in mid-October.

The first Thanksgiving celebration wasn’t in November at all. In fact, some historians suggest it was held in mid-October, similar to the present-day Canadian Thanksgiving. It was President Lincoln who set the November date in order to coincide with the Pilgrims’ landing on Plymouth Rock.

In 1621, settlers in Massachusetts celebrated what has come to be regarded as the first thanksgiving in the New World. On October 3, 1789, George Washington issued a proclamation creating the first Thanksgiving Day designated by the national government of the United States of America, to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26, 1789. John Adams and James Madison similarly declared Thanksgiving a holiday. However, it wasn’t until October 3, 1863, at the height of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln issued a Thanksgiving Day proclamation encouraging Americans “in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea, and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.” Thanksgiving has been celebrated in the United States ever since. Lincoln’s Proclamation was printed in Harper’s Weekly on October 17, 1863, to help spread the word about the day of observance.
