Allow me to share my wow for this particular riverbed and gravel. Doing a guide in Kyoto I’ve known for a long time that Shirakawa river, literally white river, in Gion is named so because its riverbed used be filled with sand formed from weathered granite rocks. Walking in a water source mountain, it was exciting to see white riverbed and weathered granite.

It’s rare to see snow accumulate in downtown Kyoto, but it does up on the Mt. Atago, where is a part of Kyoto city. It’s minimum 5 hours of hiking. Snow is much deeper now than in the pictures. I am a beginner in hiking; my knees were shaking on the way down.

At a local shrine the grass hoop was placed for the summer purification from the end of June to mid July.

The Gion Matsuri, the world’s longest-running festival started in 869. Its origin was to pray for an end to the epidemic that raged throughout the capital at that time. Although the processions of decorated floats were cancelled for these two years due to the Covid-19, some of the floats were at least constructed this year to keep the tradition.
