Pengerupukan festival... at night, we parade the demonic ogoh-ogoh statutes. Painstakingly handmade by each village banjar, the ogoh-ogohs are dramatically flourished to represent demonic and mythological characters from the Balinese canon. On Pengrupukan, the ogoh-ogohs are paraded accompanied by fireworks, torches and booming percussion orchestras, intended of course to scare away evil spirits.

It is tradition for the men of each village banjar to build each oooh-ogoh by hand from wood, bamboo and papier-mâché materials in the month leading up this multi-day holiday celebration.

On the one hand, a bit of carnivale, on the other, an art competition amongst neighboring villages. Most importantly, the ogoh-ogoh parades prepare the island for the following day, the holy day of Nyepi (Balinese New Year) a cloistered day of total silence and rest.

Nyepi is a day of mandatory and welcomed quiet, stillness, reflection and forgiveness. In preparation for Nyepi, the noise & flamboyance of the ogoh-ogoh parades intends to ward of any residual evil spirits or negative energy that might interfere with this day of reflection and peace.

For thousands of years, Indonesians have employed terracing irrigation systems to spread water throughout the rice fields. In Bali, each rice field area is managed by communal ownership, called the “subak,” which can be loosely described as a sub-community of the village. Terracing irrigation systems are perfectly suited for mountainous, volcanic Indonesian Islands, where flatlands are sometimes sparse.

Nyepi is the Balinese “Day of Silence” that commemorates the Balinese New Year. The night before Nyepi, Pengerupukan, each village in Bali celebrates with large, riotous parades where they burn effigies of Ogoh-Ogoh demons considered manifestations of all persons, objects or forces that disturb human lives. This parade is an exorcism ceremony at the main village crossroad, the meeting place of the demons.

Batu Bolong temple, at our home break in Canggu, is one of the most important and historic temples along the coastline of Bali. Built in 1489, it is one of several pillar temples for the island’s protection. This temple is frequently used for major ceremonies intended for cleansing and blessing of the entire island. It is connected with the other coastal temples of Bali, such as Tanah Lot, Uluwatu and Petitenget, based on the pilgrimage journey of the highest holy man to reach enlightenment according to Indonesian Hindu scriptures.
