When it's hot out and you are biking all day, it's nice to have an option to go for a swim. The Empire State Trail does better than any other long distance trail in the USA in this regard. We even have a waterpark right next to the trail. You can't beat New York for bicycle touring!

People are always defacing these Empire State Trail signs. This is why getting GPS from us is a good idea if you want to bike across the state. Who knows why people do what they do? But when signs go missing, the GPS will always guide you.

It was a beautiful morning out on the Bronx River Parkway, which was closed to cars today for "Bicycle Sunday". You almost had the road to yourself. It's Day 2 of our two day trip across Massachusetts and Connecticut. Today was the Connecticut day and we were mostly on the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail for most of the day. Once again, the ride was really beautiful, and we passed through many towns so we were never far from trailside services. Even in today's heat, the trail was relatively cool thaks to all of the tree coverage.

The trail goes directly into downtown New Haven, which makes it very easy to connect with trains. (Unfortunately my cell phone battery died when we were approaching New Haven so I don't have any pictures from there). Fortunately wayfinding signage in New Haven is good, so I was able to figure out where to go without the map on my dead phone.

We are riding across Massachusetts and Connecticut over two days and WOW it is great. Today was the Massachusetts day where we rode south through the Pioneer Valley between Erving and Southwick. Most of it was bike paths, but there were also some beautiful roads too. Amherst and Northampton are lovely towns to stop in for breaks. Further south, East Hampton and Westfield both have interesting historic landscapes, including wide open to***co farms.

Riding through this area, you also see the benefits of investing in Bicycle related infrastructure. There were so many bike lanes, bike route signs, traffic calming measures and more in so many of these towns. Drivers were always aware of my presence, and often stopped for me when they didn't have to because the bike facilities just seemed "normal". It would be great if New York could take it to this level.

After enjoying several days of great biking on Long Island, we are heading directly to Massachusetts to do a two day tour of the Pioneer and Farmington valleys, where there are some fantastic bike paths!

I wish I could say this connection was straightforward, but it was rife with problems thanks to poor information and really bad customer service from Amtrak. This is one of the main reasons why we encourage our customers to avail themselves of our trip planning services. When Amtrak notified us (overnight) that our train was mysteriously canceled (they gave no reason) we were able to figure out a workaround thanks to our knowledge and experience. Forget about calling them for help. We tried that and they kept us on hold for over 30 minutes and then treated us like absolute garbage on the phone, with an extremely nasty and poorly trained customer service agent hanging up on me because I was asking too many questions.

Whatever Amtrak tells you, it is important to remember that this Railroad has been so badly run for decades and they are generally unreliable and not bike friendly (see the picture of the "bike rack"). So having a backup plan can be very handy. It paid off today. Don't just "wing it". You need a plan. (Bonus points.. which mode of transportation pictured below wouldn't normally be needed to complete this trip).

It doesn't get much better than a ride to Montauk Point with its dramatic views. It's also fun to bike through Camp Hero State Park with its Cold War ruins. So much to enjoy and so many beautiful beaches.

It's incredible to ride a bike on Shelter Island. There are so many quiet roads with breathtaking vistas at every turn. There are many places to access the water, so one is free to choose where to sit for a break or perhaps go for a swim. The ferry ride to and from is also fun.

It's time to head to the Hamptons, where fantastic cycling awaits! You're never far from a selection of serene beaches. Which one do you pick for a refreshing swim?

This area is beautiful and perfect for cycling trips. But it also hard to navigate. It is also expensive here. So it's good to know what you are doing.

Even on the hottest days, it's still a nice ride on the Empire State Trail in Southern Westchester and the Bronx because there is so much shade. We made a loop using the Bronx River Greenway where there were opportunities to cool off using opened fire hydrants or playground spray areas.
