When booking infant tickets, persistence pays off!
Most american carriers charge only 10% of the fare for infants under 2. This is great for cash or economy tickets bought early. The problem is, when this ticket is an award, the carrier will charge 10% of the full cash fare, which is the most expensive fare for the class.
Is there a way around this? No, but you have options.
If the fare is really high (for example you're flying an F award), 10% of a full fare could still be over $3000! Look to see how much another seat would cost in points or look to downgrade a class.
If arriving from an international destination to the states and you still have another leg, ask the airline to price to the entry point to the US, this could save you money as you'll have less distance on the ticket. But so how does your kid make out the rest of the way home with only being ticketed to your entry point? Infants fly free in the US, just add them at the counter.
The last option is to call the airline daily and have them price it out. Usually it will match the highest fare in the class on the ITA Matrix, but sometimes it prices differently and this is when you have to act! I personally used this technique when the original infant fare was supposed to $630 ($6300 full fare). Just the other day I called and when the fare was calculated, it came to $340. You can bet I jumped on that!
Infant fares are great things, as you can fly with your child at 10% of the cost. But most people don't realize their possible cost on awards. Just know you have options to still fly in style, bit it may just take some persistence!
