How Do STG Project’s Impact Nepal?
As I’m sure some of you know, STG have launched volunteering projects in Nepal from June this year onwards. Our trips will either provide an enthralling two-week project or an immersive one-month adventure, with a team of like-minded volunteers who will quickly become friends for life. They will include a tour of the capital city, Kathmandu from our local team, visiting some of Nepal’s famous temples and landmarks. The majority of the trip will be spent in our project village, getting to know the children and villagers helping out in the local school teaching education, sports and life skills. Our one month trips even include an unforgettable excursion to Pokhara, surrounded by the Himalayas as well as being home to activities such as paragliding, skydiving, trekking and more. This all sounds great right? However, there is something you must first know which is way more important. What is our impact on Nepal, and how do we put it into action?

I am sure you have some knowledge of how Nepal experienced a devastating disaster a few years back. On April 25th2015, Nepal was struck by an 8.1 Richter scale earthquake. Almost 9000 people lost their lives, with a shocking 22,000 severely injured. Villages and infrastructure were destroyed leaving many people without homes, as well as a net loss in the economy of over 7 trillion. It’s estimated that the tourist flow after the quake decreased by 72%, meaning the economy suffered even further due to the tourist industry no longer providing an income. It is important to understand that since this quake, Nepal have made a miraculous recovery, building far stronger infrastructure in most places with more advanced warning and safety systems. The people of Nepal are truly remarkable, after experiencing so much pain and loss they still remain so strong and positive. The sad reality is that after an event like this one, many villages are still yet to recover. Education has been compromised, as well as a lack of jobs. The economy decrease means that government schools are given close to no funding, and the resources needed to rebuild the villager’s homes are difficult to find. So now all of the heavy stuff is how of the way, how are we planning on helping?

Picking our project village was not an easy task as many across Nepal are in need of desperate help and support. However, alongside the Hope Worldwide Charity who were a massive help, we found the village of Chhaimale which is situated two hours south of Kathmandu up in the mountains. The village was badly affected by the quake, with a small government school struggling to provide the resources and teaching needed to educate the village children. A remarkable villager named Bjay managed to set up a gorgeous resort, which has the aim to provide the village with income in order to get it back on its feet. The Hope Charity have done an incredible job with building a centre, which is planned to be used for teaching the villagers useful skills such as English and I.T. The centre is going to be sustained by Bjay’s other skill of turning pears into sweets in a small factory inside the centre. The entire project is truly inspiring, and STG are excited to be a part of making a positive impact on Chhaimale… but how?

At STG we believe education & life skills are so important for children in order to find their passion in life. With an education combined with life skills, comes an ability to succeed in almost all areas in life. This means that if the village children in Nepal are given the opportunity to have a high quality of education, they may just be able to go out into the world and get high income jobs that they are passionate about. In turn, the happiness of the country’s people will be improved even further, as well as a lot more people able to earn an income leading to an increase in the country’s economy. This chain simply shows that education is key for a country and its people to be successful. However, on the contradictory we also believe that traditional education holds many flaws. This is why we choose to teach through the methods of “Franklin Covey’s Leader In Me” program, which incorporates important life skills combined with an interactive teaching style. This includes adapting our teaching style to children who may learn differently, while having access to extremely useful resources needed to improve their education.

Ultimately our impact is not possible without you. Our volunteers are well and truly the driving force of improving the quality of life in Nepal’s villages. Every single volunteer who signs up, is making an impact in itself. Committing to travel while making such a huge difference to other people’s lives is a remarkable achievement. While our volunteers are out in Nepal, there will be a clear acknowledgment of progression. Working with the children, getting to know them and their families, playing sport, and embracing their culture will all completely change your perspective and inspire you while positively impacting Nepal. Government schools in Nepal receive around 25,000 rupees funding a year equivalent to just £170. This is nowhere near enough to provide the right resources and teaching to a school with almost 100 students. This is where STG comes in in order to help make it easier for them to progress. Through our volunteers we will support the teachers, leaving them with valuable interactive lesson plans they can continue to use even after our departure. An amount of the project fee per volunteer, goes towards providing the school with sufficient teacher training, resources, sports equipment, and funding in order for the school to carry on the path we have started.

Our impact on Nepal is ongoing, with project trips running monthly for the foreseeable future. Not only this but we will continue to provide support to the villages even when we are not there. We do this by carrying out local community and staff training, researching new initiatives on how to help villages all over the country, as well as having ongoing contact with our project villages. There is plenty more information you can find on our Nepal projects on our website, including the trip journey, our health and safety plan, pricing, and a project cost breakdown. Keep updated on the blog for more posts like this one, giving you more of an insight to how we plan to create a bright future for Nepal! With monthly two week projects running from June 2019 onwards, now is the time to get involved. Feel free to contact the STG team with any questions you may have, by emailing us at [email protected]// or message us on Facebook. I hope you have all enjoyed reading this blog, and feel inspired to visit Nepal with STG! I’ll see you soon.
