How Do STG Project’s Impact Nepal?

As I’m sure some of you know, STG have launched volunteering projects in Nepal from June this year onwards. Our trips will either provide an enthralling two-week project or an immersive one-month adventure, with a team of like-minded volunteers who will quickly become friends for life. They will include a tour of the capital city, Kathmandu from our local team, visiting some of Nepal’s famous temples and landmarks. The majority of the trip will be spent in our project village, getting to know the children and villagers helping out in the local school teaching education, sports and life skills. Our one month trips even include an unforgettable excursion to Pokhara, surrounded by the Himalayas as well as being home to activities such as paragliding, skydiving, trekking and more. This all sounds great right? However, there is something you must first know which is way more important. What is our impact on Nepal, and how do we put it into action?

I am sure you have some knowledge of how Nepal experienced a devastating disaster a few years back. On April 25th2015, Nepal was struck by an 8.1 Richter scale earthquake. Almost 9000 people lost their lives, with a shocking 22,000 severely injured. Villages and infrastructure were destroyed leaving many people without homes, as well as a net loss in the economy of over 7 trillion. It’s estimated that the tourist flow after the quake decreased by 72%, meaning the economy suffered even further due to the tourist industry no longer providing an income. It is important to understand that since this quake, Nepal have made a miraculous recovery, building far stronger infrastructure in most places with more advanced warning and safety systems. The people of Nepal are truly remarkable, after experiencing so much pain and loss they still remain so strong and positive. The sad reality is that after an event like this one, many villages are still yet to recover. Education has been compromised, as well as a lack of jobs. The economy decrease means that government schools are given close to no funding, and the resources needed to rebuild the villager’s homes are difficult to find. So now all of the heavy stuff is how of the way, how are we planning on helping?
