The Black Hills Photo Shootout brings photographers from across the country to South Dakota for photography education, exploration, and connection.

networking opportunities, unbelievable outdoor photography subjects, and most of all, fun! Great courses, exceptional instructors, incredible photo opportunities, all in one weekend in the beautiful outdoors… who could ask for more!?! The first Photo Shootout was held in the Black Hills of South Dakota in 2010, and has grown dramatically from its start. This event attracts photographers from across North America and even a few international shutterbugs. It appeals to a broad range of photography enthusiasts, from amateurs to professionals, offering workshops and events suited to a wide range of photography interests and levels. The Photo Shootouts are organized and run by J Grammond Photography. We partner with local universities, businesses, and photography clubs; models, and artists to mesh local resources with the expertise of a professional photography workshop leader. The Black Hills Photo Shootout will hold workshops throughout the amazing Black Hills Region. This year, the plan is currently that participants will have the opportunity to attend a Welcome/Keynote; four photography workshop sessions of their choosing, and several other informational and social events throughout the weekend in-Person; as well as optional pre-conference sessions, and Night Owl sessions. Deadline: All entries must be submitted by November 15th, 2024.

The top 4 photos will be selected by a panel of judges. These four photos will be featured on our BankWest Insurance page and will be chosen by community members according to the highest number of Facebook likes.

The photo with the most likes will take home the grand prize and be featured in the lobbies of our BankWest locations. Second Place, Third Place, and Honorable Mention will be chosen by the number of likes on each photo and will also receive a monetary prize. Share with your friends and family to vote for your favorite photo.

We had a successful day of Pre-Conference sessions today; and a really fun and educational Keynote at Springs Lodge & Cafe in their Lounge area. I couldn’t get everyone in the pic, but it was standing room only!

We are close to one week out from the start! I have something new for you to consider!

Instructor George Wilson and I have added a pre-conference indoor session called, "Successful Composition." If you are already registered for the event, please consider adding one of the pre-Conference sessions on this form!

***If you haven't registered for the event, but could make time for a couple hours of instruction from great photographers, I am opening up these three sessions to you! This is great for those living in, or near Hot Springs that either don't have the time - or maybe the budget at this time to participate in the whole event.

The Black Hills Photo Shootout brings photographers from across the country together in South Dakota for photography, education, sightseeing, camaraderie, and fun! Through the Photo Shootout we are able to showcase the beauty and diversity the area has to offer both visitors and residents while providing attendees an incredible weekend packed full of informative photography workshops, great photo networking opportunities, unbelievable outdoor photography subjects, and most of all, fun! Great courses, exceptional instructors, incredible photo opportunities, all in one weekend in the beautiful outdoors… who could ask for more!?! The first Photo Shootout, planned by Chad Coppess and Scott Howard, was held in the Black Hills of South Dakota in 2010, and has grown dramatically from its start. This event attracts photographers from across North America and even a few international shutterbugs. It appeals to a broad range of photography enthusiasts, from amateurs to professionals, offering workshops and events suited to a wide range of photography interests and levels. The Photo Shootout is organized and run by Jay Grammond, J Grammond Photography.
