From Legend to Legacy: A Remarkable Encounter in Hwange National Park 🦁

On our recent safari in Zimbabwe’s breathtaking Hwange National Park, we had the privilege of crossing paths with one of Cecil the Lion’s sons—a majestic reminder of a legacy that captured hearts worldwide.

This incredible lion embodies strength, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Hwange’s wild landscapes. Watching him move through his domain was like witnessing history come to life.

Cecil’s story brought attention to the importance of conservation and the challenges Africa’s wildlife faces. Seeing his lineage thriving is a testament to the vital work being done to protect these iconic animals and their habitat.

Every safari moment is unique, but this one was truly unforgettable.

When lions climb trees…

One of my favorite moments from our recent trip to Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe, was spending almost the entire morning with this playful pride. Seeing lions off the ground like this isn’t something you come across every day, making it truly special. They played, lounged, and explored the fallen tree branch, giving us a rare and beautiful sight.

The early morning light added a golden touch, perfectly illuminating the pride and their surroundings. After hours with them, we wrapped up with a memorable bush walk before heading back to camp, feeling deeply connected to this wild, untamed landscape.

Shot on my Canon R5 + RF 24-105mm f/2.8 Z—a lens that never ceases to amaze me when it comes to capturing the fine details of moments like these.

🔍 Spot the leopard! It’s not terribly difficult if you look closely, but take a moment to appreciate just how incredible her camouflage is against her surroundings. Imagine how many leopards “miss” on safari.

We spent our final evening on safari with this magnificent cat, and she gave us an unforgettable sighting. After hours of watching her at her den, she finally decided to leave her hidden spot, gracefully leapt up onto this fallen tree, and settled in for a moment’s rest before heading out to hunt.

Moments like these remind us of how nature can be both awe-inspiring and humbling at once. 🐆🌿

*A tiny predator says goodbye*

Just as we were waiting for our shared charter flight out of Shakawe in Botswana’s beautiful panhandle, a pearl-spotted owlet came to say goodbye. 🦉 This tiny diurnal predator, about the size of your hand, is a first for me to photograph! What an incredible gift as we leave Africa—this place never stops surprising me with its wonders. More to come soon!

🌍🦁 In less than a month, we’ll be back in Africa, and it’s got us reminiscing about unforgettable moments out in the bush! Like this one—setting out in the early morning, we were searching for the lions we heard during the night when we came across this stunning brown snake eagle, turning toward the rising sun. 🌅🦅

Snake eagles are one of my favorite birds of prey in Africa. With their upright posture, featherless legs, and large heads, they’re easy to spot, even from afar. They’re also very active in the heat of the day, hunting their favorite prey—small snakes—while most other wildlife rests. 🐍

It’s always a thrill to witness these magnificent birds in their element. Have you ever spotted a snake eagle or another bird of prey on safari?

🎥 Epic Wild Dog Encounter on the Lower Zambezi 🌅🐾 Following a pack of wild dogs along the banks of the Zambezi River in Mana Pools National Park was already a surreal experience, but what happened next was unforgettable. As we trailed the pack toward the river, they became curious about some nearby crocodiles lurking in the water. 🐊 It seemed like the crocodiles thought there might be a fresh kill nearby, so they crept in close for a better look. The tension, the curiosity, and the sheer rawness of the moment—wild dogs and crocodiles eyeing each other at sunset in the Zambezi Valley—was something truly special to witness.
