Malta Tal-Mixta Cave
NEW POST: If you saw our Malta post earlier this week, you may have noticed we included a mention of a famous cave that was thought to be the inspiration for Calypso's Cave in Homer's Odyssey. We had such a memorable hike to that cave that we thought the story needed its own post. Take a look!

Adam was in New York for a couple days this week, and he went up to the Edge to watch the sunset after work. 🌇 It's located on the 100th floor, 1,200 feet above the ground, and it even has a glass floor in one spot where you can look straight down! It's the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere and it has amazing views of the city! It just opened in the past couple years, so it's a great alternative to well-known observations decks like Top of the Rock and the Empire State Building.
Tal-Mixta Cave on Gozo
Our adventures in Malta brought us to the island of Gozo today! We hiked up to the Tal-Mixta Cave, which overlooks Ramla Bay. The views were incredible! 🤩 This location is across from another famous cave as well; on the other side of the beach you'll find Calypso Cave, which is said to be the cave referred to by Homer in The Odyssey. In the story, the cave was the spot where the nymph Calypso kept Odysseus prisoner for seven years after his ship wrecked in a storm. That cave is now closed to tourists (they worry about it collapsing), but we're sure the views from Tal-Mixta are just as impressive and might inspire travelers just as Calypso inspired Homer!

Natural Bridge, Virginia
We made our way down to Natural Bridge State Park yesterday for a fun day trip. We wrote about Natural Bridge in our Shenandoah Valley post (check out the link below) and there is a lot of history to be discovered here. Natural Bridge was surveyed by a young George Washington (he also carved his initials in the wall), and Thomas Jefferson loved the bridge so much that he purchased the land and built a log cabin onsite so he could host guests. In his book "Notes on the State of Virginia," Jefferson wrote:
"The Natural bridge, the most sublime of Nature's works ... It is impossible for the emotions arising from the sublime to be felt beyond what they are here: so beautiful an arch, so elevated, so light, and springing as it were up to heaven, the rapture of the spectator is really indescribable!"
Jefferson really, really loved Natural Bridge. Some more of the famous visitors to Natural Bridge include former US presidents James Monroe and Martin Van Buren along with notable names like Sam Houston (leader of the Texas Revolution), Herman Melville (author of Moby Dick), and William Cullen Bryant (American poet and writer). William Cullen Bryant even compared the "world-famous bridge" to Niagara Falls as two of the most notable locations in all of North America.
