Friday was a wonderful day. After getting to our room at about 10:30 the night before we were able to sleep in then went to get our COVID test. The hotel had the system well set up and we had the result within an hour.
We then had lunch at the spa beffore enjoying a couples massage. Ahh!
We culminated our short trip with a dinner and Cirque Soliel show.
Our flight home was not until 3:40pm so we were able to have a leisurely morning before heading to the airport.
for our safe flight home.

After we left Chichen Itza we went to a cenote, or sink hole that was filled with water. These were considered sacred in the Mayan culture. We decided not to get in the water and took our time getting pictures.

Friday, we got up early to catch our tour to Chichen Itza, the Mayan ruins which is one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. It was about a three-hour bus ride. On the way we went through a modern Mayan village. I had thought that the Mayan Civilization was obliterated by the conquistadors, so it was good to see that I was wrong. There is a major effort to invigorate the culture and language.
After lunch we went to the ruins. The main pyramid is the Temple of Kukulcan, the feather snake. You can see the head of the snake at the base of the steps in one of the pictures. The city was very large and included a large sports field where often the MVP of the team ended up being one of the human sacrifices. Such incentive to do well. The bas relief is part of the depiction of the sports battle.

After our adventure in the Rio Secreto, we had lunch and then headed to Tulum. The pictures used by permission off 4 Hemispheres Photography and show the Talum Castillo, two iguanas having a confrontation, me and Diego, our guide who spotted me as the slowest in the group and let me set the pace. This was an area that the Spaniards used as a trading base. This place is well documented in James Mitchner's Caribbean.

One thing I love about travel is serendipitous discoveries. My two goals on this trip were to see the Mayan ruins at Tulum and Chichen Itza. We were able to arrange tours to both at our hotel, the Mayan Palace on the Riviera Maya, part of the Vidanta Resort.
Our great surprise was the Rio Secreto which was included in out Tulum tour. This is a cavern that is wet. I worked as a tour guide one summer in college at a dry cavern, so this was a treat. After suiting up in wet suits we went underground and had about a one mile trek through the cave, mostly in the water. I cannot adequately describe the feeling off floating in this lake and enjoying seeing the stalactites and other formations above me. I have to give credit to Diego, our guide for helping me throughout.

We went to Cancun Mexico for a long weekend starting last Wednesday. It was our first trip out of US since Covid started. We flew Frontier. It is my first flight on that airline since it has gone ultra-budget. I was surprised that the seats don't recline at all. We got our tickets through points on our VISA and still paid an additional $108 per person for one carr on, one checked and a seat assignment. Not quite as budget as it appears. I do not recommend this airline. They did get us to and from Mexico safely, though.
With all the hoopla about vaccines, we were never asked to produce our vaccination cards.

Some facts of interest about Tahiti!
It is only an 8 hour flight from Los Angeles, about the same as going to Europe.
Tahiti gets as many visitors in a year than Hawaii gets in a week!
It is in the same time zone as Hawaii.
You do not have to cross the international Dateline to go to Tahiti.
Ask me about opportunities.

This week I am attending a virtual conference for Tahiti Specialists hosted by Tahiti Tourisme. I am learning a lot about the different islands that make up Tahiti. If you have ever dreamed of going to Tahiti there are some terrific promotions right now. Tahiti is open with very few restrictions. Call me if you have any questions.
A year from now my husband and I will be visiting four of the islands, Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine and Bora Bora.

Today Don was told about a Silo Art Tour in the State of Victoria north of Melbourne. The towns with grain silos have painted huge murals on them. The tour goes through about 9 towns north east of the Grampians. Will see if we can add this to our trip.
This is the fun part of adventure planning.

During the lockdown and heavy travel restrictions, it is a good time to dream and plan your next adventure. We had a tour scheduled for June 2020 to Dubai and India. We have postponed the trip to June 2022. I am still looking forward to see the Taj Mahal.
What is on your bucket list that you can start planning now.
My husband is retiring in October or November of 2022. Just before Christmas we are planning a year long trip starting in Fiji for New Years Eve, then 3 months in New Zealand, 6 months in Australia with a week in Bali to be able to comply with Visa requirements, then about 3 months in Southeast Asia. The planning is extensive, but a great activity during this restrictive time.

What adventures do you want to look forward to?
