Murchison Falls National Park

Ecology of the park and the surrounding wildlife Reserves.

There are very few national parks within East Africa with the diversity of habitats found within Murchison Falls conservation Area. Murchison comprises half of the major biomass ( a large ecological community usually with dominant types of vegetation) found in the world. There are; Tropical Savannah, Tropical woodland, Tropical deciduous, Tropical evergreen forest, and permanent swamps.
Despite this relatively little scientific study has been carried out in the park and its environs,. The exception has been the Budongo Forest Reserves ( 793sq kms) just outside the park and the elephant ecology in North Bunyoro, South of the river, These two subject areas have been focused upon in the past because economic in the case of the forest and the potential of ecology calamity as a result of the over population of elephants pre- 1920s economic activities in Budongoin1932 Budongo forest was gazetted as a forest reserve.lt is the largest and richest mahogany forest in East Africa.
come and enjoy with us and experience the nature.

Touring of Murchison Falls National park
Forest walks

Primates in the forest reserve can be seen black white colobus monkey leap and chatter in the tall forest, the low - frequency boom of male blue monkeys is a peculiar s sound in the forest signs of elephants, Buffalo and bush back are common along the pathway, and although present in good numbers forest duikers are a rare find. Snakes are relatively common in the forest, but the guides are familiar with some of their regular resting sports.
42 species of butterfly have been identified in the forest including the African giant swallow tail the largest butterfly in Africa.
Butterflies and moths constantly flutter a cross the path some particularly members of the charaxes genus are very rare.
The main road to the Wairingo Gate is also the boundary between the Karuma wildlife reserves to the east and the Bugungu wildlife reserves to the west. The woodland kingfisher and red- throated bee- eater constantly catch the eye along this stretch of the road as they flash tree to tree baboons litter the road and then jump into the bush when vehicle get too close. The baboon here are still shy as they have not yet been spoilt by the public.
There are at list 300 separate sub- species of baboon in Africa, although the Ankole olive baboon are the only found here normally baboon spend the most of the day on the ground feeding moving to a high vantage to sleep at night. They keep together in a large troops with several dominant males each having a Jeremy of his own.
As the road descends down the Rift Valley escarpment toward the wairingo River there is a noticeable change of vegetation from woodland to grassland. The woodland are noticeable as it is dominated by one species of tree lonchocarpus laxiflorus. Before L. Laxiflorus become pervasive the area was a Terminalia woodland. Heavy elephants damage and in controlled fire led to the disappearance of the terminalia And the colonist ion by the fire- resistant L. Laxiflorus. There are few animals on the drive from the gate to Paraa. The particularly interesting sections are the crossing of wairingo Jollya and sambya rivers.
The woodland a long the rivers are good sports for viewing birds and the occasional buffalo.
The junction with the road to the top of the falls is Avery prominent ridge , and there are often lion lazing in the grass looking southwards from this ridge the southern boundary of the park can be picked out more or less in line with the two visible hills: Rabongo ( 1,292 sq km) to the left and Igisi hill (1,260 sq km) to the right.
The Rabongo Forest is nested between these two hills it is not actually on forest but in fact a chain of eight relic forest Patel’s
The headwater of the wairingo River pass through the middle of the forest as with other areas of the park the primary cause for the destruction of want once must have been a much large forest area has been the presence of too many elephants.
The Rabongo Forest still has a rich diversity of mammals and bird and is one of the most important biomas in the park. The streams in the forest support a variety of birds Including the rare finfoot and the shinning - blue kingfisher.

Touring of murchison falls National Park
Forest Walks
On entering the park it is possible to stop either in the Budongo Forest (300Sq KM) or the smaller pabidi forest (40sq km) for a guided walk. Walks are led by trained guides who have a keen insight into the forest ecology Budongo has one of the longest recorded logging histories in the world and thus makes an excellent location for studying Forest regeneration in the wake of selective logging and its impact on wildlife. The birdlife is extremely rich. These forests boast some very rare forest species such as the blue throated warbler, dewarf, kingfisher, velve- mantled , drongo, and grey chinned sunbird. During the 2.5 hour walk in the reserve it is common to see 50 to 60 different bird species in total, 332 species have been documented. The Royal Mile or Kabalega Drive is considered the best bird watching in Uganda.
The main atrraction of forest walk is the habuated chimpanzee (chimp walk are limited to six peoplew per group) It is estemeted that there are between 400 and 800 chimps in the reserve. Habituating chimps is difficult in the forest becouse the troops move over extensive areas in search of seasonal fruiting trees. They are ceaseless foragers, usually only gathering in lager groups to share a lager find of food such as a fruiting fig tree. Chimps prepare nests for them selves every night, weaving a simple mesh of branches of trees. Other primates can be seen in the Forest.
MORE is coming about forest walk.

Wildlife is one of the components of Tourism
That covers both Flora and founa although most of us relate it to animals in the wild as tourism continues to grow and expand it is inevitable that pressures on wildlife and the environment will also increase although this has been addressed through the iconomic incentive in terms of jobs and incom.

• BOAT TRIP

Seeing the Nile is always an awesome experience whether its for the first or tenth time. The launch Trip to the bottom of the falls is the main attraction of the park. During the prime days of the park in the late 1960s and early 1970s twelve launch were operating twice a day one of these launches was re - introduced and one of the old coxswain's
, Francis Oyoo who has been in the park since 1963 is operating the launch named Kiboko creating a nostalgic feelings of the "old day"

•BIRD-WATCHING ON THE RIVER

The bird along the Nile can be divided into three main groups. There are those that feed in open water such as darter, cormorants and duck, There are those that hunt the river margins with specially adapted physiology such as herons, kingfishers, storks,Ibises egret's, geese and the ever present fish eagle, Then there are birds that feed off the insects that rise from the water and these include the migrant swallows, some bee - eaters, and pranticoles.

•GAME DRIVES

Early morning is unquestionably the best time to see and photograph animals. The Nile valley is one of the hottest place in Uganda and animals tend to look for shade and rest by 10am. Many animals are most active between dusk and dawn. It is always advisable to take food and water with you on a game drive. The African Bush is nothing if not unpredictable. Getting stuck in mud is part of the Adventure be prepared!

•TERMITARIUMS

The thickets along the road next to the Delta are a very distinct habitat Worth further emphasis. These are called "termitariums" because they all start life as an abandoned termite mound the eroded relic of which can be seen at the center of each thicket. The termitariums in this part of the park are very distinct because they are in the flood plain of the delta.

•BIRD-WATCHING ON THE GAME DRIVE

As with the river, the Buligi circuit has its own distinctive bird life that changes with each habitat. On the plains common large birds found on the ground are marabou stocks, ground horn bills, secretary birds, black - bullied bustards and crested crane seasonally, abdims storks and open billed storks are found in large flocks, feeding in the grass on swarms of ants or grass hoppers.
