There are a lot of awards that recognize the best 🍃 products, however, the companies that focus on the ancillary services and products have little to look forward to when it comes to recognition and awards. This is why The Emjays was created; a collaboration between Farechild Events and the largest cannabis trade show, MJBizCon.

We would love to see these awards go to our partners and friends uplifting small farmers, legacy and equity folks, and the "little guys" who are the heartbeat of The Trail! And of course, we would be honored to be among them.

Which is why we humbly ask for your Nomination of The Cannabis Trail's 2024 Coop Campaign for Best Marketing Campaign or Collaboration of the Year! Be sure to add your other favorites while you're there, but your vote counts even if you only nominate for one category. Thank you! 🙏

The secret's out, and The Emerald Triangle is ready! We were excited to see the recent piece in the LA Times highlighting Mendocino as part of "w**d country" - an alternative travel experience to wine country (or perhaps in complement to it). The Cannabis Trail is mentioned as a fun cultural journey, along with our partnership with local Destination Marketing Organizations in uplifting the stories and experiences unique to Northern California's cannabis country. From the article: "Since leisure-use cannabis legalization, Mendocino County tourism has seen a constant uptick in visitors, about 60% more annually since 2017 [based on Transient Occupancy Tax collections]," Ramon Jimenez said. "As travelers become more educated, they want to move past the lounges and dispensaries to an authentic place of source. ... This growth has spurred a new co-op between Visit Oakland, Visit Mendocino County and Humboldt County Visitors Bureau [focusing] on the Cannabis Trail." Landmarks in Mendocino who received a shoutout include Area 101, Plantshop and The Bohemian Chemist. Congrats all around on this amazing coverage just in time to plan an epic summer road trip!

If it weren't for LGBTQ+ activists, we would be nowhere near legalizing access to the plant. The stories of both q***r and cann*bis liberation share entwined roots, and as we celebrate Pride this month we honor pioneers like Dennis Peron and Brownie Mary who risked it all to make sure that patients had access to this life saving medicine during the AIDS epidemic and beyond by creating Proposition 215 in California. And what better way to celebrate their legacies than by traveling the Trail where their stories come to life? Now is the perfect time to plan a journey along the Trail and visit some LGBTQ+ owned shops, lounges and experiences along the way. Check out our Pride-themed itinerary and hit the Trail! Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈

Now that the Department of Justice has recommended that cannabis be rescheduled from Schedule I to Schedule III, they are soliciting public comments on the proposal. It's time to make your voice heard and stand up for the small farmers in the state legal industry who have already been through enough - insist that the plant should be removed from the CSA completely and regulated similarly to alcohol. If you're currently in the industry, your voice is especially important to share. The public comment period closes July 22nd and your feedback can be submitted online through Regulations.gov (at the link use the Submit a Formal Comment button to send your comments) - https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2024/05/21/2024-11137/schedules-of-controlled-substances-rescheduling-of-marijuana

Thank you to Thrillist for their recent coverage of the Trail! As the weather gets warmer, nature is calling and there are so many great places to explore along the Trail.

Why visit cannabis country? As Thrillist's Kelsey Allen puts it in the article, "For decades, Northern California has long been a pioneer in the cultivation and legalization of cannabis; the Emerald Triangle, which consists of Mendocino, Humboldt, and Trinity, is the largest cannabis-producing region in the United States due to its warm temperatures and access to water. Stretching from the Emerald Triangle to Santa Cruz, the Cannabis Trail educates travelers on the War on Drugs and the significance of the cannabis legalization movement, honoring the people and places that have contributed to policy changes."

Big news for the plant today! While it's a small step in the right direction and not the descheduling that we truly need, the DEA announced today that they would move forward with rescheduling cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III - the biggest drug policy move in 50+ years. This change raises many more questions and our work is far from done, but it makes things like banking, scientific research, and tax write offs for business expenses possible for an industry that has been struggling. And any type of relief for our beloved community is definitely something to celebrate! 🙌 We hope that this change opens up the growing world of canna travel and tourism to more people as we continue to push for full descheduling. 🌱

Each year The Trail uplifts three brands that are authentic and purpose-driven, and led by humans that come from the culture. For 2024, we are proud to shine a light on the Farm Cut, Native Humboldt, and Next Level Edibles. Here are their stories:

🍃 Farm Cut
Farm Cut is a cooperative of 5 farms located in the heritage growing regions of California. Briceland Forest Farm and Whitethorn Valley Farm reside in Humboldt, Emerald Spirit Botanicals and Happy Day Farm are located in Mendocino County and Down Om Farm hails from Nevada County. All five farms use regenerative farming methods and cultivate food, medicinal herbs and practice land and animal stewardship. You can find Farm Cut in over 30 retailers across California.

🍃 Native Grown / Native Humboldt Farms
Lindsey Renner is a member of the Round Valley Indian Tribes of Northern California. She is Wailaki, and her farm is located on land that belonged to her tribe before white incursion. Lindsey founded Native Humboldt Farms in 2016. She is a 25 year plant advocate, and has been growing outdoors for 16 years. She uses natural and indigenous farming practices, and she uses her brand to help spread awareness of the history of her tribe and Native American culture. Her mission is to help support a regenerative supply chain from Humboldt County to the Bay Area through her microbusiness Native Oakland.

🍃 Next Level Edibles
Brothers Anthony and Cartier Jenkins share a similar experience with depression and anxiety/PTSD. When they were prescribed medications, both found that they made them feel worse without therapeutic relief. Until they discovered the healing benefits of cannabis. Drawing from his interest in baking from a young age, Anthony began infusing his gourmet creations. Cartier became passionate about cultivation. Thus, the origin of Next Level and their hand-crafted gourmet edibles. Now, asides from their critically-acclaimed baked goods, their infused oil provides the home chef a way to create their own delicacies.

This Black History Month it's important to honor and support Black owned businesses, especially since the Black community was disproportionately affected by the War on Drugs. Several BIPOC owned businesses and brands are honored as landmarks along The Cannabis Trail that highlights the culture and history of the canna community across nine counties in Northern California, including two in Oakland. This month is the perfect time to visit these landmarks and support them:

Tucky Blunt received the world’s first equity license to open his store Blunts + Moore which now hosts an outdoor lounge called The Happy Lounge that’s perfect for stopping by before games at the nearby stadium.

In the lively Temescal neighborhood, Root’d in the 510 is a gorgeous equity dispensary with a wide selection and helpful signage that highlights BIPOC, women, and veteran owned brands that they carry while you shop. They are working on an epic lounge and community gathering space that should be open sometime this summer, but the store alone is worth a visit!

You can find lots more Black owned businesses to support by following our friends at the Equity Trade Network. While you’re out supporting these Black-owned shops this month and all year long, may we suggest some fun effect pairing experiences to enjoy with your treasures - like legendary BBQ or a visit to a museum? We’ve got the perfect itinerary in Oakland planned out for you - come blaze The Equity Path along the Oakland Cannabis Trail.
