As part of the road to recovery for Lahaina and the broader island of Maui, the Governor recently publicly encouraged travelers to return to West Maui starting October 8 (note: the rest of Maui continues to welcome visitors). The physical destruction from the fires was generally limited to the town of Lahaina, or around 1% of Maui's land area, and did not include Kaanapali, Napili, Kapalua, and the many other areas of West Maui.

Maui's economy, which is heavily dependent on tourism, is counting on the return of visitors to fully recover from this disaster and to preserve jobs and livelihoods, especially for the vast majority of Maui residents who are not eligible for disaster assistance and for whom the continued severe reduction of tourism would be devastating. Please consider visiting Maui soon as a way to support the broader island community. Thank you.

TRAVELSHACK TIP

Trying to schedule the best day for an activity based on weather? Weather is very localized in Hawaii, as well as relatively unpredictable. Visitors are often nervous and confused after seeing a generic weather forecast showing 50% chance of rain everyday. That's because the higher elevations of Hawaii -- the original volcanoes that formed the islands -- do get rain often, if not daily. On the other hand, the spots where visitors stay tend to be sunny and dry most of the time, although weather systems can still impact them.

We use Weather Underground (wunderground.com), and we like how you can pinpoint the forecast pretty well. After searching for a town, select the "Change" arrow near the top to select a more precise location on the map. Then we usually use the 10 Day view, so we can visually see the chance of precipitation and cloud cover at different times of the day.

Another website we use, especially for wind and surf forecasts, is windy.com. Is there a website you find reliable for Hawaii weather and surf conditions?

As a general rule, we recommend booking early in your trip if possible (although ideally not your first day in case of any arriving flight issues). This way in the event of a weather cancellation, there is a greater chance you can be rescheduled.
