Movie London

Movie London Movie London grew out of the travel guide to film locations around London, listing details of over 500 films, published by Titan Books in 2008.

Movie London (Titan Books, 2008) is definitive travel guide to London locations of over 500 films, illustrated with maps and hundreds of original photographs. The guide book is divided into 17 walk and contains separate sections on hotels, bars and restaurants seen in the movies.

No Time To Die (2021) 🎬 Centaur Street, Lambeth, London SE1. 🎬

For full details of all NO TIME TO DIE locations, see http://movie-locations.com/movies/n/No-Time-To-Die.php

In London, James Bond retrieves his old V8 Vantage (identical to the one seen in 'The Living Daylights', down to the registration plates, back in the days when Bond looked like Timothy Dalton) out of storage in the railway arches on Centaur Street, Lambeth SE1, south of Waterloo.

The tunnel out of which he drives is actually an underground parking space. Be aware this is private property and please do not trespass.

Now, for some reason I can't fathom, the whole sequence is flipped, left to right, though the number plate is displayed correctly. The bit of graffiti on the far wall was the giveaway.

JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION – For all your Jurassic needs...

No, it's not really an illegal dinosaur breeding facility, it's an equipment hire store.

But this business in Northolt, West London, was briefly seen in the newsflash sequence of 'Jurassic World: Dominion', as baby pterosaurs are confiscated in a raid.

The film was based at Pinewood Studios, so there's probably a bit more of the UK than you might have realised.

SHAUN OF THE DEAD

It's always sad to see a block of flats that used to be a pub – a more and more frequent sight these days.

This was a particularly heartbreaking loss – it's 'The Wi******er', dammit. The irony being, of course, that they could only film there once the pub had closed (or was about to close).

It was the Duke of Albany down in New Cross Gate in South London, which is a bit strange since Shaun's neighbourhood is in North London. Clearly this was due to the availability of the pub for filming.

The name is based on The Wi******er on Archway Road in Highgate – which has just reopened (2022) after coming very close to suffering the same fate as the Duke of Albany.

But the pub in the film is based on another nearby boozer, the Shepherds Inn, also in Highgate, now reinvented as crazily popular music bar Boogaloo, 312 Archway Road.

For comparison, here's also an old photo of the Duke of Albany, shortly after filming but before it was converted.

This Victorian memorial was featured in my all time favourite horror comedy – there are not many which are both genuinely horrific AND funny – which centred around an old London theatre.

I was so disappointed to discover that the theatre, which stood on Putney High Street, had been demolished shortly after filming in 1973.

What made up for that was the discovery that the tomb of its villain / antihero was real.

Any idea whose face replaced that of sculptor Robert William Sievier when this, his last resting place in Kensal Green Cemetery, was featured on-screen?

Amazingly, when you consider how much of the area has changed since the Sixties, much of 's genre-busting film really was filmed around the real (and a little of neighbouring Fitzrovia).
It uses ingenious, largely practical effects rather than falling back on the lazy option of CGI.
And it includes enough sly movie references to programme a damn good film festival.

◀︎◀︎ Skyfall (2012) 🎬 Charing Cross Underground Station, Strand, London WC2 🎬

For full details of SKYFALL locations, see http://movie-locations.com/movies/s/Skyfall.php

When the captured Silva ( ) escapes into tunnels beneath his cell in , almost the whole of the following sequence uses Charing Cross Underground Station on the Strand, and in particular its decommissioned Jubilee Line platforms.

Charing Cross is on the Northern and Bakerloo Lines but it was once also the southern terminus of the Jubilee Line.

In 1999, after the line's proposed route was changed following the development of Docklands, its Jubilee Line platforms were closed.

Although now off-limits to the public, this part of the station is still maintained. It's used to try out new design ideas, to audition buskers (who need a licence to perform within the tube system) and – importantly – as a film location, seen in productions such as The Bourne Ultimatum, Paddington, Morbius and Creep.

In Skyfall, Bond tails Silva to 'Temple Station', but when he makes that leap onto the rear of the train, that's on one of Charing Cross's disused platforms. And when he follows Silva off the train at 'Embankment' and there's a chase down the escalator – well, that's Charing Cross too.
Location spotters, as well as rail enthusiasts, will be happy to know that you can visit the closed section of Charing Cross, along with its service tunnel and the ventilator shaft, on one of London Transport Museum's occasional Hidden London tours.

◀︎◀︎ Skyfall (2012) 🎬 Charing Cross Underground Station, Strand, London WC2 🎬

For full details of SKYFALL locations, see http://movie-locations.com/movies/s/Skyfall.php

With ( ) on his tail, Silva ( ) makes his way into the London underground system – supposedly at 'Temple Station'.

In fact, the steps on which he’s surreptitiously handed a policeman's uniform by accomplices are those of Exit 3 of Charing Cross Underground, where the main ticket hall is masked by a stretch of false wall, matching the station's white and orange tiles.

Most of the underground sequence was filmed at Charing Cross, mainly on its decommissioned Jubilee Line platforms, which are not generally open to the public.

But more to come on that…

SKYFALL (2012): On the trail of a hitman, James Bond ( ) flies off to and, while there are a few aerial views and driving shots of the Chinese city, most of this sequence was filmed in and Southeast England.

The high-rise to which Bond follows his quarry can be found just north of busy Liverpool Street Station.

The striking X-braced office block is the Primrose Street entrance to Broadgate Tower, off Bishopsgate.

It’s a small world in the movies – Broadgate Tower stands directly opposite the highrise ‘Moscow’ office of Russian oligarch Viktor Cherevin (Kenneth Branagh) in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.

Back in April 2019. I took one of the London Transport Museum's occasional 'Hidden London' tours.

(Highly recommended: https://www.ltmuseum.co.uk/hidden-london)

This was a guided tour of the Jubilee Line underground platforms at Charing Cross station, which were closed down in 1999. Since then, they've regularly been used as a filming location (Charing Cross is used for present day scenes, the much older disused platforms at Aldwych Station are used for period pieces).

I noticed that this part of the station had temporarily been redressed as New York's 'Front Street' station, but nobody seemed to know what was being filmed.

Last night I watched Morbius and this scene popped up...

OK, maybe not the standout cinematic masterpiece of the last 20 years, but good finally to find out what the production was.

In Disney’s origins story, young Estella arrives in London and heads directly for the fountain in ‘Regent’s Park’. Londoners will be surprised at the look of the famous North London park in the film.

The fountain seen on-screen is in the gardens of the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, with an extra pool added.

The college grounds, used in various guises throughout Cruella, are a regular movie location, seen in productions as diverse as Les Misérables, Thor: The Dark World, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and The Dark Knight Rises.

Now part university campus and part historic tourist attraction, the grounds – along with the Chapel (seen in Four Weddings And a Funeral) and the astonishing Painted Hall (another screen favourite) are open to the public.
