State Heritage description of The Gables

A rare timber house from the mid to late Victorian of the Victorian Carpenter Gothic style with a high pitch hipped roof and asymmetrical facade.
Built on one of the earliest blocks of land developed in Mudgee, the likely first owner of the house was Mr. William Randall, a grazier, placing the date of construction as circa 1885. Then it was owned by William John Sheppard 1885, the former owner or publican of a Mudgee Hotel, which was situated across the street, close by this house.
This timber house is exceptionally rare due to the unusual and excellent carpentry style. A single skin cottage with walls of vertical dressed boards within an exposed timber frame. It was possibly prefabricated, or in kit form, and as such has the potential to yield more information about the design and construction of timber building in the mid-Victorian era.
It contributes to the Mortimer Street streetscape and to the stock of historic buildings of Mudgee. (Ref: Snapshot MWRC)
