The Hills are Alive
Tribute.
Here on my last day in Austria, in the hills above Salzburg, I could not resist one little Julie Andrews spin through this picturesque meadow.
(You can't hear me, so you have to sing the theme song from The Sound of Music for yourself)

Ceiling of Books (Istanbul Contemporary art museum #1)
As I walk away from Istanbul, I wanted to do a quick couple of posts about one of the nicest surprises in my whole time there; a small gem of an contemporary art museum. This video is shot walking around their library which has a ceiling composed of suspended classic paperbacks, like walking beneath your childhood

The rain falls on the just and the unjust alike.
Just so you don't think its all wine and roses, here is a little slice of a bad day. On mile 20 of a 27 mile day in the rain.
At some point when your shoes are soaked through and your joints are freezing up, you stop thinking about the distance and focus on the little things:
So, pictured, is me trying to smoke a cigar under an umbrella in a 10 mph headwind. Because I am an idiot.
HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE LONG WALK HOME.
And to celebrate what a strange, Sometimes unexpected, and occasionally awful year this has been, here is a video of me singing "Walking in a Winter Wonderland". Badly. In a snowstorm.
Enjoy.
Short Video, Long Tunel
Short Video, Long Tunnel
Along the Black Sea coast the Turks have created a broad, smooth roadway. They have achieved this, in places, by tunneling through large sections of the coastline. This often laves me choosing between spending two hours mountain climbing, and spending one hour underground.
This is 30 seconds from the middle of a 3.5km tunnel. Hanging on to the uneven concrete siding is not so bad, but the pressure, noise, and pollution play hell with your throat and ears.
Also, the exhaust gasses make you feel like you are high for the rest of the day.
Turkish tunnels are pretty good, better than all the ones in the Stans'. Those ones are, as a local guy told me with a smirk "Made in China"*, and have very bad ventilation.
**The Chinese government will undertake civil engineering projects anywhere using conscript labor. They even bring their own prison camp and guards. I wouldn't want to be using any of those bridges or tunnels in twenty years, but I hear that they are a real bargain.
Georgian hymn
Merry Christmas, Christians
All I have for a Christmas card is this short video that I shot in a 1000 year old Georgian cathedral of some local ladies having a spontaneous Georgian hymn practice.
Enjoy, and spread love this Christmas.
I'll tell you about this dinner later, but I thought I deserved to post my total inability to eat a whole pickled catfish for your pleasure.
I have no idea what Is going on here, but it's super exciting
Joel Spends a day in detention
This Video is the only evidence of my very long day of being interrogated by many kinds of police yesterday. It is the footage the lesser ISI guy accidentally shot while he was ripping everything in my bag apart (you can see it all spread out on the table in the video).
Don't worry about me, after 9 hours of talking to 28 different soldiers, cops, intelligence agents, and security people, the answer turned out to be that I wasn't doing anything wrong, so they just dropped me off. I the middle of the highway. At 10pm. In the rain. 60 miles from the ungoverned tribal area.
