Today, we said goodbye to the month in the best way possible, with an incredible show: dolphins jumping alongside our boat and the presence of tropical pilot whales, gifting us a very special scene, swimming next to their mothers! 🐬💙🐋⁣

Every day at sea has reminded us of the wonders of nature and how lucky we are to share these magical moments with all of you. ⁣

🐋 Incredible find during one of our whale watching tours! ⁣
We came across pieces of a giant squid 🦑, an essential part of the diet of pilot whales, one of the most fascinating species inhabiting the waters of Tenerife. ⁣
⁣
Did you know that these impressive cetaceans need to consume up to 30% of their body weight? ⁣
⁣
Males can weigh up to 4 tons and females around 3 tons! Thanks to the abundance of food in our waters, about 400 pilot whales have made Tenerife their home. ⁣
⁣
Plus, they have no competition, as no other predator feeds on giant squid, partly because they live in deep waters and also because their high levels of ammonia would make them toxic to humans. ⁣
⁣
Every time we head out to sea, we’re amazed by nature and how these species are perfectly adapted to this environment. ⁣
⁣

¡Los machos pueden llegar a pesar hasta 4 toneladas y las hembras 3 toneladas! Gracias a la abundancia de comida en nuestras aguas, alrededor de 400 calderones han hecho de Tenerife su hogar.⁣

🐬 Bottlenose dolphins are the most common dolphin species spotted on our tours. In fact, we see them on 70% of our trips.⁣
⁣
The pods often “work” together by herding fish into a bait ball, making it easier to catch their prey.⁣
⁣
They also use active echolocation during their search for schools of fish, which we can hear during our tours thanks to our underwater hydrophone.⁣
⁣
⁣

🐬Los delfines mulares son la especie de delfín más común observada en nuestros tours. Tanto que los vemos en el 70% de nuestros tours.⁣

Las manadas a menudo “trabajan” juntas reuniendo a los peces en una bola de cebo, lo que facilita la captura de alimento. ⁣
⁣
Además utilizan la ecolocalización activa durante sus búsquedas de bancos de peces, algo que podemos escuchar durante los recorridos gracias a nuestro hidrófono marino.⁣

🐳One of the questions we get asked the most is when is the best time of year or the best time of day to take one of our tours.⁣
⁣
🤩Luckily, and unlike most whale and dolphin watching destinations, Tenerife has resident cetaceans such as pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins, ensuring sightings all year round!⁣
⁣
The best time of day depends a bit on what you're hoping to see.⁣
Since pilot whales are our main resident species, we can talk about their daily activity.⁣
⁣
In the morning, pilot whales are usually calm and resting during the tours.⁣
As the day progresses, they also tend to become more active.⁣
⁣
⁣

🐢 Loggerhead turtles are the species we most frequently see during our watching tours.⁣
⁣
In Tenerife, we usually encounter them at a young or juvenile age, as they are not born on this Canary island but in the southeastern U.S. or Cape Verde, and then they make their way here.⁣
⁣
The marine environment of Costa Adeje provides a great combination of warm ocean temperatures, and abundant food, making it a comfortable place for them to stay 😉⁣

⁣
🐢 Las tortugas bobas son las especies de tortuga que vemos con más frecuencia durante nuestros tours de avistamiento. ⁣

En Tenerife las podemos ver de corta edad a juveniles, puesto que no nacen en la isla canaria sino en el sureste de EE.UU. o en Cabo Verde y luego llegan aquí. ⁣

El entorno marino de Costa Adeje ofrece una buena combinación de temperatura cálidas del océano con abundante alimento lo que hace que se encuentren muy a gusto como para quedarse 😉 ⁣

Yesterday was a wonderful day 🤩. We saw 4 species of cetaceans along our whale watching tours, such as Pilot whales, Bottlenose dolphins 🐬, Atlantic Spotted dolphins 🐬 and Common dolphins 🐬. In these past days the Bottlenose #dolphins 🐬and the Atlantic Spotted dolphins 🐬 had a blast 💥 in the waves 🌊 and they really putted on a show 🥹. We LOVE ❤️ to see them #happy and free. Dolphins 🐬 have many different reasons to jump/breach: having fun, cleaning their skin, communicating, swimming away etc. The reason will depends a lot of what is going on around them. During our whale watching tours many of you wonder if we have sharks 🦈 in Tenerife and the answer is yes 🙌🏻. This is a very young #Hammerhead #shark 🦈 that was swimming near our boat not too far from the coast. It was a very exciting moment for everyone on board because this is a very rare encounter. Sharks are very shy despite their reputation.
