Vanilla is the fruit of an orchid, its a dark brown bean. Vanilla orchids are grown in tropical climates, and are the only orchid with an edible part
Producing vanilla in FP is time consuming, the flowers have to be hand pollinated and it takes 9 months for the bean to be ready for harvest. One flower produces one bean, then you have over a year of drying massaging and maturing to produce the vanilla flavour

Dont throw away the pod! It contains more vanillin than the seeds.
You can use a bean several times and once it starts to lose its flavour, if you put it in a jar of sugar it will dry out completely and you can use a coffee grinder to make a powder.

I posted last week about James Norman Halls Island home, he was the little known, American co-author of Mutiny on the Bounty but what actually happenned on the Bounty?
William Blighs first visit to Tahiti was not aboard the Bounty but as Cpt. Cooks navigator on Cooks 3rd trip here. During Cooks first visit in 1769, when Joseoh Banks accompanied him, Banks, who was passionate about botany noticed the Breadfruit Tree (Uru in tahitian) and that it was a large nourishing fruit. After his return to the UK, Banks and King George III who both owned slave plantations in the Caribbean decided to send an expedition to collect seeds from the Uru tree take them to the Caribbean to feed the slaves for free. They chose Lieutenant Bligh to captain the ship since he had already been to Tahiti and Cook wasnt an option as he died in HawaIi on Bligh's first trip here. Bligh's trip was surely destined to failure, he tried twice to go around Cape Horn but failed due to bad weather, turned and went the long way taking nearly 10 months to get here. On arrival he asked the locals for seeds from their Uru but unfortunately the trees no longer produced seeds, the Polynesians having preferred fruit with less seeds so he had to stay 5 months and collect actual plants, his sailors meanwhile went " native" and did not want to return to England, who would ? Several deserted and when he was ready to leave Bligh had to round them up but refused to allow their girlfriends to come along, he then rationned water in order to keep the plants alive. The sailors mutinnied and returned to Tahiti for their vahine's, they eventually found Pitcairn island was incorrectly marked on their charts and decided to stay there.
Bligh was a strict man with a nasty tongue but less generous with the floggings than we are led to believe, he was an appalling people manager and suffered 2 mutinys and riots when he was governor of Australia but Fletcher Christian was also at fault, having failed in his duty to keep the sailors disciplined
Today Pitcairn island is inhabited by descendants of the mutineers and the polynesians who accompanied them, Many have moved to Norfolk Island closer to Australia. During the tours i give i have met descendants of both Bligh and Christian and a couple of years ago i met the 7th, 8th and 9th generation descendents of Fletcher Christian here on Tahiti for a family reunion.

Maison James Norman Hall Tahiti
It's low season for many of us here and I'm not been so busy driving around the island.😁 so here is a post about one of the interesting places to visit here especially if you're interested in the story of the Mutiny on the Bounty. There were 5 films made, the first has been lost, the second is a black and white movie with Errol Flynn, it's on youtube.
Then we have Clark Gable and Charles Laughton in the 1930's after that Marlon Brando and Trevor Howard in the 1960's, the last version which is the most historically accurate was made in the1980's with Mel Gibson and Alastair Hopkins, my favorite actor by the way.
But who is James Norman Hall and what he's he got to do with all this? Most people have never heard of him! Well in the 1920's after fighting in 3 army's in WWI he and a friend Charles Nordhoff came to these islands to rest recover and discover.
JNH realised that the story ofvthe Mutiny had never been written in novel form so he and CN went to work, the book was such a sucess it was almost immediately made into a film: the rest is history.
Today his home has become a museum which one can visit and discover more about him and his family, the books he wrote and what actually happened with the Mutiny and the mutineers who ended up on Pitcairn Island which is the most isolated inhabited island in the world, inhabited by tge descendants of the mutineers and the Polynesians who accompanied them

What a great day with Amy and her family who travelled our islands on the Seabreeze to renew their marriage vows. We spent the day together travelling around Tahiti with even a trip to Teahupoo.

Yesterday the Crown Princess was in Papeete as part of a world tour. I took some of the passengers to visit Tahiti's west coast, we visited the Museum of Tahiti, Maraa fern cave, tge Arahurahu Marae, Vaipahi Gardens and Juliette gave us a tour of the property that once belonged to the author Robert Keeble she is so knowledgeable about tge local plants and their uses!
