My hike through Ilhara Valley in Turkiye felt like I was in the movie Homeward Bound. As I set out on the trail I had my initial dog companion, who was a delight. Continuing onward I had a cat come blaring meows at me as it ran towards me on the trail. When we met, I noticed it had breakfast in its mouth, which once we were together it decided to drop to the ground and eat its head. We all continued to walk together.
I loved the views of the valley, and entering the cave buildings. Afterwards, I enjoyed a light meal at one of seriously scenic riverhuts and the company of a new cat friend on my lap.

I could never say no to a little summer trip down the Jersey Shore. My latest one took a quick pitstop in Atlantic City, where I revisited Lucy the Elephant and saw some more quirky spots.
Did you know that the Miss America beauty pageant began in AC?
Or that NJ is the second state in the US where casinos became legal?
I visited two new to me lighthouses, got some seafood (sorry to have skipped White House Subs this time around), and continued down the coast.

Devil's Den State Park had been on my radar for some time, and was finally in day tripping distance when I stayed in Fayetteville, Arkansas a couple years back. This trail has got a little bit of everything - views, a waterfall, cool geology, some interesting history - and even an appearance from a ringneck snake. Glad to have visited.

Bogue Banks is a barrier island on the Atlantic Coast, just south of the extremely popular Outer Banks in North Carolina. Maybe more local people know this area, but out of towners have certainly never heard of it - making Atlantic Beach a serious gem in my department.
A beautiful boardwalk, pastel beach houses, and nearby Fort Macon State Park - this town has a lot going for it and is serious summer vacation material.

What do Grandma Moses, decoy ducks, a Shaker shed, and an entire steamboat have in common? The Shelburne Museum is a really eclectic place just 10 minutes south of the popular city Burlington, Vermont. Free First Friday Eves in the Summer (starting June 7th) are such a good excuse to visit.

A lighthouse is always a good destination, and this day I got two for the price of one. I wanted to take the hike to the candy striped Hornby Lighthouse, and passed by Macquarie Lighthouse on the drive there.
The hike was unique, with a stoic kookaburra, an exotic beach, beautiful flora, and military history.

I visited Keowee Toxaway State Park to see the only natural bridge in South Carolina, and found the enchanting trail blooming with mountain laurel. The bridge was a little hard to spot, it’s not entirely prominent or mind blowing, but I loved it for the geological oddity that it was just the same. A couple of little cascades and some jack in the pulpits, this hike was so dreamy.

Story time! I’ve been pretty lucky while traveling, but got particularly unlucky while in Turkiye. The day I entered the country, having just spent a week in Morocco, I became massively sick. Fever, shortness of breath, dizziness, and serious food poisoning symptoms for well over a week and the worst of it was in the place I wanted to experience the most, Cappadocia.
If I have to look at it in a lucky way, this was the only spot on my Turkish roadtrip I would be in an airbnb for more than one night until I made it back to Istanbul, so at least I didn’t have to pack a suitcase up and drive for hours each day to get to the next location each day.
I am an absolute nutcase that won’t let this sort of thing keep me down, so I pushed through and ended up hiking surprisingly many miles a day (one day 9!). I was so sick I could only take one bite of this delicious manti (Turkish dumpling) dish, my husband happily ate the rest. I lived on sips bean soup broth and a handful of french fries. One day I was so repulsed by food, my husband got me to eat McDonalds fries while slumped over in our car! Something I would normally never do when traveling, because I love trying local cuisine.
Even still, Cappadocia was truly mind blowing - landscapes as beautiful as I had dreamed of.

Happy Memorial Day! Grateful to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this beautiful country, and their families. This is New Bern Battlefield Park in North Carolina, the spot where Union forces took the city during the Civil War.
I love battlefield hikes because it is interesting to learn the history, but also bizarre to feel the contrast of the peaceful natural setting in todays world - a serene swamp filled with birds, turtles, and jack in the pulpits.

Dover, Delaware, what a place! I had such a great time exploring for the afternoon with my Mom. We hiked around Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge and got chased by flies (as you should in the summer season) all over the boardwalks and up the fire tower. When we had had enough of that, we took to the beautiful gravel roads and had a little safari - spying tons and tons of birds.
Afterwards we visited the lovely local Biggs Museum of American Art, then had the best lunch of crab cakes and soul food at Tomeka's Home Style Eatery.

The cruddiest thing that ever happened to me when traveling was this. I was on a boat and buzzing with excitement, halfway to the Great Barrier Reef. THE GREAT BARRIER REEF! The boat stopped, so I figured we were at our first snorkeling spot when the captain came out. What he actually said was, the engine is broken and we need to head back. We crept back to land at a snail pace. No other boats could take us to the reef or even take us to land more quickly, no way to get our precious vacation time back halfway around the world. Half the day was wasted, and I didn’t have any extra time slotted to visit the Great Barrier Reef. I was crushed.
This is such a first world problem, because I was literally in Queensland - Australian paradise - but it was really really hard for me to get my chi up the rest of the day. I created a plan b and it was great - to hike around the Conway National Park.
Views were beautiful, had the whole place to myself, but boy did I struggle to feel grateful. On any other day, this hike would have made me happier than anything.
I hope someday I’ll have the privilege of being back in Australia (my favorite place in the world!) and get a second shot at seeing the one that got away.

The 2023 winter when I visited Santa Cruz, California there was newsworthy weather. Dealing with the rain was rough in many ways, lots of park and road closures, with some days where I couldn’t even go out. But! There were some ways in which the rain enhanced things, creating spectacular tide falls like the one at Scott Creek Beach.
You have to visit at low tide (which is great for tide pooling too), there should haven been some rain recently, and boom - one of the most majestic sights on earth!

Years back I visited Smith Island, in the Chesapeake Bay belonging to the state of Maryland. It is one of my favorite places on earth. Ever since I’ve been dying to see if Tangier Island, it’s neighbor island belonging to Virginia, would hold up.
So I took the ferry, and after passing the pelicans and crab shacks on a beautiful cruise, I arrived. It was too much fun walking the streets which feel out of time, admiring the architecture of the little houses, boats, and watching for birds. What’s awesome about this island is that there is a little beach - while on Smith Island you have to kayak to one on a nearby uninhabited island or just jump off a dock.
Sitting on a boardwalk, snacking on soft shell crab sandwiches under the blazing sun with my Mom, happy memories I’ll never forget.

Wild horses on the beach, is there a more romantic notion? Years back I visited Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia - and had always dreamed about returning to the area to check out Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland. So here we are.
I think I loved the MD barrier island even more. It could have just been the day - but the horses were more plentiful and closer, the scenery was just out of this world - even from the road, and the beach was glorious.

One of the wonderful activities during my cruise to Antarctica was taking zodiac boat rides. You go from your big boat onto a tiny boat and get to zip around up close and personal with the icebergs, wildlife, and landscape. This particular ride was my favorite - the water was like p**s on a platter and the views were unforgettable.

Ölüdeniz Beach is one of many ‘Blue Lagoon’ sites around the world, this one is in Turkiye. A lot of times I’ll see people put up pictures of places I’ve been that are saturated in color and don’t look anything like the site. This place is the real deal. Even on a cruddy cloudy day where I got rained on shortly after taking this picture, the color was positively popping.

Wowowow. Natural Bridges State Beach is a treasure in Santa Cruz! There are so many sea arches on the Cali coast, but this is one I always spot on my husbands autogenerated background - and smile thinking ‘I’ve been there!’ The gorgeous sea arch is just the start of things, there are sensational coastal views, a monarch butterfly grove, and unreal tide pooling! Starfish! Anemone! Psychotic amounts of sea urchin! Magical place on earth.
