MITCHELSTOWN HERITAGE DAY
A diverse group including international visitors attended the successful Mitchelstown Heritage Day on Saturday last conducted by Ballyhoura tour guides Michael Bermingham and Seamus Fox
It encompassed Ballyhoura Walking Festival , Munster Vales and Ireland’s ancient East as a celebration of Ireland’s Heritage week
It opened with hurling heroes talk at Mitchelstown Library. A photographic display was afforded to the many fans of native game who heard or saw the exploits of cuchulann to memorable encounters with Christy Ring, Austin Gleeson,Tom Cheasty, Ned Power ( former Ballygiblin coach) Mick Mackey, Jimmy Doyle, JBM, Babs, DJ. JJ, Rackard brothers, Pat Hartigan, Paddy Kelly, Pat Heffernan, Mick Houlihan, Eanon Gregan, John Galvin, Paddy Barry, Padraigh Horan, PJ Whelehan, King Henry, J*p Ryan, Micheal O'Hehir, Jamesie O’Connor, Johnny Callinan, John Connolly, Effin Eddie, Lar Corbett. These wielders of the caman surely with many others enriched people’s cultural and sporting lives .
CULTURE WALK
It was followed by a guided culture walk around the heritage town visiting “Galtee”, O'Connell GAA Park. Ice House, Coop’s first cheese plant, Jail, Free Masons House, Skittles game in Tod’s Yard, Park, John Mandeville, Timepiece, Croquet game in Kingston College, finishing with Coffee in Ramble Inn, Weather stayed dry to facilitate this interesting tour
Ballyhoura International Walking festival also included various other walk venues in the area
On Saturday a Half marathon held at Ballyorgan
Kilmallock Town Walk,
On Sunday Kilbehenny walk took off from Galtee Castle wood as did guided walks from Doneraile Park, Lough Gur, Kilfinane Historical town, Labbamolloga townland Walk and Bruff and Knocksouna harvest trail
GENEALOGY TALK:
Thirdly Clan search gave an informative Genealogy talk in the library on "How to trace ancestors near and far. Interested people sought and received information on their own family histories.
