Time to think about spring trips. The annual Caballo Blanco Ultramarathon is March 2, 2025, in Urique. Reserve hammocks or tents early. Our 5-day hike starts 2/24 from the rim, or 2/23 from Tucson. Imagine a forty km hike, over 5 days to watch an 80km race they finish in 6 hours.

It's the vibe.

The winter rains were not kind to the Sierra Tarahumara. The plowed land is bone dry down a meter deep, waiting for seed. They stagger planting, some in early May, some in late May, and throughout June to Dia de San Juan. Hiking for a week, we saw few wispy clouds, but we enjoyed some time with the friendly, hopeful folks down there. Visit coppercanyontrails.org to sign up for our next b***o trip, mid October, 2024.

Another R2R2R narrowly completed. The Pamachi bridge renovation is also completed; kudos to Lorenzo Moreno for using the Ejido funds to help the ejido. Maybe a hot springs project is in the works.

Copper Canyon is a worthy destination in Chihuahua, but sometimes it's the journey. If driving from Tucson, the stops in Arizona are legendary such as Chiricahua Mtns, Dragoon Mtns, Bisbee, Tombstone, & Douglas. Not to be outdone, Chihuahua also has some famous places like the Apache battlefield at Tres Castillos, Apache garrisons at Janos & Namiquipa, cliff palaces at Cuarenta Casas, and the pottery mecca at Mata Ortiz. This place has been it's own destination for over 5000 years! Don't believe us? Just check out the ruins and museum at Paquime. Those guys had shuttle service to Tonochtitlan and Chaco Canyon. Here is a Sierra Club workshop at the Adobe Inn inMata Ortiz.

We have seen lots of folks on the trails, in the forests, and on the mountains, who just for the first time are experiencing the great out-of-doors. That's great. But when you get the urge to GO, and the trailhead sign says, "Pack it in, pack it out", you have to ask yourself, are they talking about poo?

Sometimes! Mount Shasta for instance provides a cool gun-range-target and a mylar bag, AND a second bag with kitty litter. Yes, pack it out. Kayaking on Lake Powell? A waste disposal system that's basically coffee filter (where you make your "Deposit") dropped into a 4 inch diameter PVC tube is Mandatory! Cleanout stations are provided at the marinas.

But sometimes the rules, etiquette, and stardard operating procedures aren't so clear. What to do? Here's help:
