When you get to the Olde Belize River, also known as River Wallace, you will board your river boat for the scenic route up down the river. You can expect to see a variety of flora and fauna and your guide will point them out. The river itself, its banks and overhangs are home to many jungle species such as crocodile, howler monkeys, iguanas, and many birds. The river was named after the Scottish pirate, Peter Wallace. Your route will be just a short portion of the 180 mile long river. The guide will also be giving you information about your second destination, the Mayan ruins of Altun Ha. Your river portion stops at the small village of Burrell Boom where you will board your transportation that will take you to Altun Ha. These Mayan Ruins were once a Mayan ceremonial and commerce center. They cover about 5 square miles in area and contain over 500 structures. This is an unique opportunity as Altun Ha is one of the few ruins left that does allow the guests to climb the structures. Altun Ha ruins were not discovered until 1963 when they were spotted from the air making them relatively "new" ruins. They date back to 250 BC and have 3 plazas and 13 center structures with the most famous being the pyramid (temple of Masonry) that rises 54ft high. The famous "Jade Head" was discovered by Professor Pendergast in 1965 who uncovered the carved head that weighs almost 10lbs. Your transportation will take you back to the cruise terminal afterwards. NOTE: The Belize government may change the rules regarding climbing of the structures at any time. A variety of boats are used with maximums ranging for 15 to 35 participants.
