One of our favorite moments from the conference was the mock survey using the HerpHAT assessment tool. Everyone’s excitement and energy was great! This fun activity was a great way to simulate a day in the field and show how this biotic metric evaluates the functional value of a wetland in Michigan with an emphasis on herpetofauna. #HRM #Herpetology #Reptiles #Amphibians #BMP #HerpHAT #Conservation #HabitatAssessment #LandManagement #WildlifeBiology
We are starting the week with a video of Blanding’s Turtles in our headstarting program! Given the current habitat conditions and population trends for these species in Michigan, human intervention is increasingly necessary to ensure populations of these species exist in perpetuity. For rare species, pressure on populations can be offset through headstarting programs, where eggs are collected and the hatchlings are released once they have reached a larger, less vulnerable body size. Headstarting is a time-intensive yet necessary part of turtle conservation to ensure at-risk turtle species persist in Michigan. Although headstarting does not reduce threats from habitat destruction, road mortality, and unsustainable collection, headstarting does improve the chances of hatchling survival to maturity. #HRM #BlandingsTurtles #Headstarting #EveryTurtleCounts #Conservation #Herpetology #Turtles
For this #FieldworkFriday, we have a video of a Blue Racer displaying some mimicry and doing its best rattlesnake impression! Many non-venomous snake species will exhibit this behavior when they feel threatened. Thanks to HRM staff member Alisia Diamond for this video. #HRM #WildlifeBiologist #Snakes #Reptiles #Herpetology #LandManagement #EnvironmentalServices #SnakesAreFriends #Conservation
It's #MudpuppyMonday once again! Here’s a recent video from out in the field. Did you know that while Mudpuppies can swim, they are often found walking along the bottom of a water body? #MichiganHerpetology #Amphibians #WinterFieldWork #Conservation #GreatLakes #Herpetology #Herps #WildlifeBiology #Ecology
