2016 Gulf recreational red snapper state season

The 2016 season will open Saturdays and Sundays in May starting May 7. On May 28, the season will open continuously through July 10. Finally, the season will reopen for Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in September and October, and on Labor Day. This would provide for a 78-day season in Gulf state waters.

A bills that would offer boaters a registration discount for buying safety equipment are ready to drop anchor on Gov. Rick Scott's desk.
In 39-0 votes, the Senate approved the two boating measures Wednesday. The higher profile measure (HB 427) would provide a discount of about 12 percent on annual vessel-registration fees next year if boaters show they have purchased and registered emergency locator devices.

INDIAN ROCKS BEACH: ( We received this request by e-mail and thought we would share).. I am a resident of Indian Rocks Beach, Fl and many of our residents are fighting the FWC final rule on the recent manatee zones they have put in place. The FWC exempted two areas in our small town and reserved them as "historic recreation areas" so that we could continue to have a small part of our waterways to ski, tube, skurf, etc. At a late night city meeting, our 4 commissioners voted to include this area in the manatee zone, b/c two of the commissioners live fronting the waterway that was exempt and did not want speeding boats behind their houses. Who doesn’t like sea turtles? Apparently, this guy really, really does not like sea turtles.
On July 17, a man attacked two volunteers protecting a sea turtle nest on a beach in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
He managed to wrestle a handgun from one of the volunteers and subsequently shot the volunteer in the buttocks. http://ow.ly/Q7W5z

The U.S. Coast Guard halted the Water Tribe Everglades Challenge near Englewood after it rescued 12 people from the Gulf of Mexico.
The 300-nautical-mile event starts in Tampa Bay and ends in Key Largo. It features small boats such as kayaks and canoes, according to its website.
There were about 135 boats and more than 240 people who participated, the coast guard said.
The weather was deteriorating and there were numerous capsizings and people suffering from hypothermia.

A proposal (HB 289), filed by Rep. Gayle Harrell, R-Stuart, would require that drunken-boating convictions be reported to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and recorded in the same way as convictions for driving under the influence.

The proposal will be considered during the legislative session that starts in March.
