Make Your Own Mosaic Tile
A BAREFOOT ACTIVITY FOR AGES 5+
In
The Girl with a Brave Heart
, Shiraz befriends an old woman by helping to tidy her house, clean
up her garden and comb her hair. The story takes place in Tehran, the capital of Iran, formerly
known as Persia. Colorful, intricately painted tiles decorated the floors and walls of houses,
palaces and houses of worship in this part of the world. In this activity, you will create your
own mosaic tile inspired by
The Girl with a Brave Heart
and traditional Persian tiles.
WHAT TO FIND
•
Cardstock, cut into 4" x 4" squares
•
Scraps of colored paper in various shapes and sizes
•
Glue stick
•
Scissors
•
Pencil
•
Mod Podge (optional)
WHAT TO DO
1.
Draw a pattern on the card stock. This will be your tile. Traditional tiles feature
flowers, animals and geometric shapes like stars and sunbursts.
2.
Use your pattern as a guide and cut out shapes on the colored paper.
3.
Carefully glue the colored shapes to the tile in the pattern you created.
TIP
For a “real tile” feel, keep the pattern spaced out a little bit so that some of the white
“tile” shows through the colored pieces.
Optional: Coat the finished tiles with a thin layer of Mod Podge to get a slight shine.
