Pre-20th Century Tours
In the footsteps has a wealth of experience designing battlefield tours to the sites of the battlefields that span the last millenium and a team of Subject Matter Experts to guide you around them. Our team include both UK based and local guides, all of whom are English speaking and have been touring for many years. Some are ex-military, some have been teachers, some policemen and others come from different walks of life, but whatever their background they all have one thing in common — a love of military history.
First World War Tours
In the footsteps have been arranging tours to the battlefields of the First World War for over fifteen years. In that time they have led customers from diverse backgrounds and different nationalities around the battlefields of the Western Front, Italy, Gallipoli, Palestine, Mesopotamia and Africa. Their team of expert guides have a wealth of knowledge about the campaigns and battles of the First World War and some are published military historians. They have followed in the footsteps of Australian, British, Canadian, French, South African, New Zealand, American and German soldiers exploring the battlefields over which they fought and telling their stories.
Second World War Tours
In the footsteps have been arranging tours to the battlefields of the Second World War for over fifteen years. In that time they have led customers of many different nationalities around the battlefields of the Northwest Europe, Italy, North Africa and Russia. Their team of expert guides have a wealth of knowledge about the campaigns and battles of the Second World War and some are published military historians. They have followed in the footsteps of American, British, Canadian, French, Australian, South African, New Zealand and German soldiers exploring their battlefields and telling their stories.
Group & School Tours
With so many companies offering battlefield tours it’s difficult to pick the one that’s best for you.
We have created our larger guide led group tours around a number of key aims:
First and foremost we want our guests to return home with a real understanding of the conflict or the battle that we have explored together. At each site we visit we will set the scene and explain what happened, where and why, in a clear and succinct way. We won't confuse you with complicated 'military speak' or bore you with confusing detail you'll never remember!
Secondly we will ensure that you experience the battles through the eyes of the soldiers who fought there. As well as the histories of what happened, we draw extensively on contemporary accounts and soldiers' letters home. We also use the poetry and art of the time to help tell the stories. We want to put you there – in the footsteps – of the men and women involved, sharing their thoughts and emotions, listening to their own words.
And thirdly, it's not just about the battlefields. We know that each tour is a holiday as well as a learning experience so we ensure that guests have time to experience some of the culture of the countries they will be visiting in a convivial and relaxed way.
How do we do this?
Our itineraries are designed to put the battles in context of the wider conflict. The individual places we stop at, and the order in which we stop at them, are selected for their importance in the key phases of the battle or campaign. At each site you will be told in a clear and concise way why the particular site is important and what happened there.
We also attach great importance to our guides. An excellent guide is, in our opinion, key to the guest enjoyment of the tour experience. The 'In the Footsteps' guides who will lead you through the stories of each battle are all professionals. Each is selected for the depth of their knowledge, their enthusiasm and their ability to tell the story in an entertaining and engaging way. Most are members of the prestigious Guild of Battlefield Guides.
When selecting hotels, we choose them not only for their convenience for the sites, but also for their ambience – some are actually on the battlefields. We also organise meals for the group in places selected for their relevance to the tour. It is extremely evocative to take dinner looking out over the Cloth Hall in Ypres or have lunch in the cellars where the 'Wipers Times' was printed!
And finally we learn! Every tour is different and even though we may be visiting the same places each time we never assume we know it all. We encourage guests to contribute their own family stories if they would like to and we can visit particular family graves close to the tour routes and organise individual acts of remembrance.
And when we get back? There's always that next piece of research we need to do to answer that question from a guest that stumped us at the time!
The itineraries here are only a guide and can be altered to suit what you want to achieve and your budget. We are flexible on dates and the type of accommodation used subject to availability.
Military Battlefield Studies
Our battlefield studies are specifically designed to deliver the core function of professional education to military units and formations. They must not be confused with other activity on former battlefields such as commemorations, the maintenance of memorials, or team building exercises as these fall within the scope of our Group Tours.
Battlefield studies are directed by the chain of command as formal training and education. We work closely with the chain of command to deliver a battlefield study that meets defined criteria in order to prepare formations, units and individuals for future operations by enhancing their understanding of current operations and improving their comprehension of conventional operations.
What does your tour include?
