Babungo, Itineraries of the Collective Memory:

The Sites of the History, Myth, and Legend

The Babungo have lived in the Upper Nun Valley for centuries, but their museum and palace have only been open to visitors since 2006.

The museum and palace are impressive both because of quality and quantity. It is amazing that the Fon was about to keep so much of the chieftaincy’s art and ritual objects in their own collection while so much of the physical culture of Africa had been spirited off to high-end commercial art galleries around the globe (several dozen out of several thousand pieces) of the most significant, highest quality pieced were are displayed in the museum (carved and beaded thrones, stools, staffs, musical instruments, jewelry, masks, containers, pipes, etc.).

No photography is allowed in the museum so will have to either visit, image, or buy the catalog to appreciate that part of the collection.

The quantity element can be viewed at the palace. In the court of the palace, there are thousands of sculptures lining the walls literally stacked to the rafters, and hanging from them as well. Also impressive is the coverage of the art; every wall is decorated, and every pillar and door frame is carved.

A lot of the work displayed royal symbols like the double gong, leopard, tortoise, lizard, and two-headed snake. Carved figures at fon’s or chief’s or king’s palace at Babungo in Ring Road area Grassfields region Northwest Province Cameroon West Africa Carved by for himself as part of his traditional role of woodcarver and sculptor.

4. Shale: the third palace of the Babungo people
5. The fourth and present palace

7. D**g: where the first people were seen by the immigrants from Forghai (Nchiafe)
8. Beh: a fall where masquerades were believed to emerge and fight for the Babungo during wars

PACKAGE ITINERARY
Bimbia was an independent state of Isubu people of Cameroon, in 1884 annexed by the Germans and incorporated into the colony of Kamerun. It lies in Southwest Region, to the south of Mount Cameroon and to the west of the Wouri estuary. Is situated on the East coast of the Limbe Sub Division.

Bimbia consists of three villages:

- Dikolo

- Bona Ngombe

- Bona Bille

In 1932 when the population of Bimbia was about 2500 people.

Bimbia was the first place white men, the Jamaican and English Baptist missionaries led by Rev.Alfred Saker set foot on the Cameroon shore in 1858, from Fernando Po. There he built the first school and first church. Later he went to Victoria where he built the Ebenezer Baptist church. The Bimbia man was the first person to go to Saker's school and the first to become Christian.

The centuries-old slave houses and other structures of historic essence here have gone to pot. What remains of this historic site are just a few structures.

For the Bimbia site to qualify, the Cameroon Government will have to prepare its documents in collaboration with “a wide variety of stakeholders, including site managers, local and regional governments, local communities, NGOs and other interested parties and partners,” states information from the World Heritage Committee website.

The Bimbia man fishes in many different ways namely: Ndemba, Ngoto, Mbunja, Efese, and Moleke.

The women are yam planters. People come to buy benyanya, smoked njanga, smoked mwanjamoto and other fish. Women come from chop farms with raw food to exchange for fish and bring things like Accra banana, groundnuts, and koki beans.

The women dry all the fish, sell it, or battler it for household needs. During the dry season, the men go to the sea at night. The women work until morning on the Efefe to sort out the fish in their different species, put on very big baskets called ‘ndenge’ and start drying them on the ‘wokas’. Woka is a stab made of bamboo from palm trees. Then carry the wokas to the ‘etaka’ or bandas where a long fire is made to smoke the fish at night. The dried benyanya is stored away to give way for other fish to be dried also. When the season for meyo is over, the season for mwanjamoto and crayfish (njanga) starts.

The highlands of Cameroon form one of Africa's most important Endemic Bird Areas, harboring 25 endemic bird species (a further two are found on Bioko/Fernando Po, a tiny offshore territory of Equatorial Guinea). These include many elusive and charismatic species such as Mount Kupe Bushshrike, Mount Cameroon Francolin, and White-throated mountain babbler.

In addition to endemic-filled highland forests and grasslands, Cameroon encompasses a plethora of habitats. Stretching all the way from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Chad, dry Sahelian landscapes, Guinea Woodlands, forest-woodland/grassland mosaic of the Adamawa Plateau, and tropical lowland forest are squeezed into Cameroon's borders. Cameroon's combined uniqueness and diversity make it a top priority for African birders.

Itinerary

Day 1: Waza National Park

Arrival at the Yaounde Nsimalen Airport and reception by Camtourventures agents.

Yaoundé. - Ngaoundere

Waza National Park and surrounds (including Mora) (1-2 days):

This area has a variety of habitats, ranging from floodplains and ponds and deciduous woodland to dry, open Sahelian savanna. The landscape is punctuated by rocky outcrops that hold species such as Stone Partridge, Fox Kestrel, White-crowned Cliff Chat, and Rock-loving Cisticola.

The best birding is outside of the National Park, along the main road about 10km south of Waza. Here many water birds congregate at the pools and the acacia shrub holds River Prinia and Sennar Penduline Tit, amongst others. Little Grey Woodpecker is also a possibility and Swallow-tailed kite is not uncommon along the roadside, especially at the end of the dry season.

For a chance to see Arabian Bustard, you will have to enter the National Park (5000pp/day payable at the entrance gate where you can arrange for a compulsory guide; 3000/day) with its many dirt tracks; large raptors and vultures are also more numerous here.

The National Park lies on a large floodplain and is closed during the rainy season. Our guide was quite good at spotting mammals (Patas Monkey, Kob, Red-fronted Gazelle, Golden Jackal, and Roan Antelope are some of the possibilities), although birding was not his forte. The more grassy areas north of Mora hold Cricket Longtail, Black Scrub-Robin, and, best of all, Quail Plover. Night drives are reported to be fantastic for nocturnal mammals although our driver was adamant that it was unsafe to drive around at night, so we cannot verify this.Day2-3: Benoue National Park

This reserve is situated on the Benoue plains, a vast area of Guinea woodlands between Garoua and Ngaoundere. The general woodlands hold species such as White-fronted Black Chat and Heuglin¹s Wheatear and if you are very fortunate, Emin¹s Shrike.

The best birding, however, is along the Benoue River. Here we found the Red-winged Grey Warbler, Senegal Batis, Violet Turaco, White-crowned Robin-Chat, Adamawa Turtle Dove, Oriole Warbler, Egyptian Plover, and White-cheeked Olive back, and Bar-breasted and Black-bellied Firefinch in the campement¹s grounds. Mammals of interest include Red-flanked Duiker and Kob, and if you are very fortunate, Derby¹s Eland. As with all national parks, there is a CAF 5000pp/day entrance fee, payable at the office at Campement de Buffle Noir, where you will also have to collect your compulsory guide (3500/day).

Our driver informed us that only the most direct route to the Campement, leaving the main road at Banda, was still negotiable, and even this wasn¹t in the best of shape. Allow 1.5 hours to drive the 27km from the main road to the encampment.

Day 3-4: Ngaoundaba Ranch

Ngaoundaba is a privately owned cattle ranch, 1.5 hrs from Ngaoundere on a rather poor dry-season road, that protects some of the woodland and forested gullies that used to cover the whole Adamoua plateau. Birding here is fantastic with great species such as White-collared Starling, Standard-winged Nightjar, Brown and Dybowski¹s Twinspot, White-cheeked Olive back, Spotted Thrush Babbler, Blue-bellied Roller, Lady Ross¹s Turaco, Grey-winged Robin-Chat and Leaflove to whet your appetite.

No entrance fee is applicable and no guides are available. All birding can be done on foot as long as you are reasonably fit.

Day 5: Shopping - Departure

Relaxation and shopping for souvenirs, off to Yaounde to Douala Airport, end of the tour.

Our Price Includes:

A vehicle in good condition 4x4 south and north, a driver, a guide, fuel, and road tolls, full board (excluding drinks but with 1.5 liters of mineral water per person per day ), accommodation in hotels and hotels Camp, canoe, all visits mentioned in the program, the 1st class train compartment and 2 single beds or 4 beds, certificate management and hosting for obtaining visas, etc ...

Day 3: Tuesday: Bertoua – Yokadouma

The real part of the adventure commences today with a dirt road that stretches 279km linking Bertoua to Yokadouma. Day 11: Wednesday: Bayanga (Sangha Bai)

Our center of interest today at the Dzanga Sangha National Park is Dzanga Bai where hundreds of forest elephants, sitatungas, Bongos, dwarf buffalos, and numerous birds meet at the saline as they look for mineral salts to facilitate digestion.

After about 30 30-minute drive and about an hour's walk in the heart of the forest, we attained Dzanga Bai and comfortably sat on the platform as we observed pure game scenery in the jungle.

Late in the afternoon, we return to the Lodge where we are honored with the Ba'Aka traditional dance before dinner time.

Day 12: Thursday: Bayanga (Bai Hokou)

After early breakfast at the Lodge, we head to Bai Hokou where knowledgeable pygmy guides are waiting for us for the Western Lowland Gorillas safari trekking. We go after them up to the last camp where the Gorilla spent the night. An hour and a half in their company gives us the opportunity to experience their social life and feeding behavior. We later returned to the research center and continued to explore by tracking mangabeys. Later we board our 4x4 car and drive back to the Lodge.

Day 13: Friday: Bayanga (Activities with the Ba'Aka Pygmies)

Our last day visit at Dzanga Sangha comprises a net hunting expedition with the Ba'aka folks, an introduction to traditional medicine by the pygmies who will show us how they use plants to heal themselves when sick, a cultural excursion to Yadoumbé a famous and typical Ba'Aka settlement to learn more about their architecture, cuisine and daily lifestyle.
