The process of restoration, sandblasted paint removal, cement mortar raking out, and finally lime mortar. This is the original finish, flush pointing with Quicklime gauged mortar. The front elevations are decorative stonework with recessed pointing. Stone is the hardest weathering surface and should not be covered with cement or paint when the stone is worth saving. If there is damp in a building, or progressive damp, blocking the original lime built walls with non-breathing material accelerates timber rot. The Highlands of Scotland traditionally limewashed cottages which helped guide nighttime walkers safely to each house in the twilight as well as protect the mortar from weathering. Please don't blame anyone if your property was not treated in the up-most technical respect, the layman and transformation from white limewash to white masonry paint, became the normality before the 1990s & 2000s when trades started to become aware and educated of the pros and cons and variable building materials. White paint is also considered traditional and accepted as the vernacular in most of Skye however is not original and cannot breathe the building. IF your old building has damp, that is when it's time to contact a stonemason who might be able to help.
