Bonjour from Ajaccio, Corsica - renowned birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. Many of its streets and squares pay homage to the conqueror who never returned home. Today we decided to tour the city by an open air train (tram). For just 12 euro per person we got to see the waterfront, old town, the monument of Napoleon Bonaparte, and some of its unique natural beauty of soaring mountains.

Today was an “Under The Tuscan Sun” kind of day. We spent the day winding our way through the hills of Tuscany to the medieval town of Volterra where the Netflix series, Medici was filmed for season 2 and 3. This town is so quaint with cobblestone alleyways, cafes, boutiques, and even ruins of Roman Baths.

Our second stop took us to a local sheep farm and restaurant where we had a delightful tasting of wine and pecorino cheese. This hard Italian cheese is produced from sheep milk. A homemade pasta bolognese lunch with a grape crustada followed. It was an amazing immersive experience and one I will never forget!

We are on day 7 of our cruise and it’s another day in paradise. Today’s port of call Olivia/Porto Cervo, (Sardinia), Italy.

Sardinia is the 2nd largest island in the Mediterranean, and across the Tyrrhenian Sea is the Italian mainland. Since the 1960’s tourists have found Sardinia a quiet and peaceful place to vacation. Many visit the beautiful countryside of the Costa Smeralda with its towering cliffs, upscale resorts and sandy beaches along emerald green waters. Porto Cervo is not to be missed!

Today’s port of call -Palermo, Sicily. The capital city, and close to where my husband was born (Cinisi). It was in Palermo that he went to elementary school for 4 years. In fact, he remembered walking to the cathedral (which we visited)every November 1st for All Saints Day with his classmates.

We also enjoyed walking through the street market where vendors were selling fresh fish, vegetables, and local treats. So we just had to stop for an arancini and granita. My favorite thing however was purchasing a tablecloth which a woman sewed right on the street!

I am excited to say I have now checked off the continent of Africa on my bucket list, as our latest port of call was Tunis (La Goulette), Tunisia. We visited the stunning ruins of Carthage, a UNESCO world heritage site and Sidi Bou Said - a village of blue and white houses that dot the hillside with local vendors and cafes. All in all an amazing day!

We are now half way into our Oceania cruise and I thought I would share some photos of the ship. The Riviera is beautiful and carries only 1200 passengers. Even though she is larger than other ships in the fleet she is very intimate with many quiet places onboard.

Gozo Island, nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean, is one of Malta’s most captivating treasures. It is a small island with rugged cliffs of limestone and pristine beaches. One of the natural wonders of Gozo is the inland sea, a small lagoon connected to the Med by a narrow tunnel through the cliffs. It is a unique spot for divers and snorkelers. The Blue Hole, a deep underwater sinkhole, attracts divers from all over the world. For Game of Thrones fans you can visit Fungus Rock where filming took place too.

Gozo is not only about natural beauty; it has a rich historical and cultural heritage. The city of Victoria is dominated by the Citadel which is a fortified city with narrow streets and panoramic views of the island.

And last but not least, one of the most visited sites on the island, the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu. This sanctuary dates back to the 1500’s and lies in the countryside outside the village of Gharb. Of the 46 churches on this small, tiny island Ta’Pinu is not to be missed.

Today’s excursion took us through the Alleys of Sorrento. Via Cesareo is lined with local boutiques, and the Piazza Tasso is home to the workshop where intricate woodwork and decorative mosaic inlay is found. Sorrento also has a breathtaking view of the Bay of Naples where locals enjoy the row of beach clubs.
